So Im new to the whole "forum posting thing" but Ive been around the block a few times and read my fair share. Ive been playing Minecraft for a bout 3 moths now so Im also fairly new to it as well. But in my time scanning the forums Ive never really seen anything about triangular or diagonal blocks. Now, that struck me as odd so forgive me if it's been brought up before but I feel like implementing diagonal blocks to the game could give a much smoother flow to many things. I came across this problem when I was designing a western themed town for my cousin who asked me if I could build something cool for him. He loves cowboys, enough said. But When I went to design the saloon, I hit somewhat of a dissapointing block. My saloon is on the corner, as they all should be, but the facade on every saloon I have seen in the history of ever, has been diagonal. and that got me thinking why that had never been entered into the game. Im sure that it would be helpful for many other things too. And it would work the same as a half block, but would give much more fluidity to the game on many things that people have designed in minecraft. Just a thought. Id like to see it happen though.
Part of Minecraft's charm is the fact that literally everything is made up of square blocks, adding angles other than 90 degrees would ruin that.

Yeah true, but adding a triangular block to the equation wouldn't really take away from the whole Minecraft finesse.
I like the retro-blockiness we have now. Sure, a triange wouldn't kill the gameplay, but it would hurt the style, just like adding battlemechs and spaceships would.

Well said, for now I guess Ill just have to stick with scaling everything up 3x to make the angle on the saloon more clear.

Slabs and stairs help.

Doing something like that is extremely difficult to implement. Right now, all blocks take up an entity for each coordinate on the grid. Making something diagonal will have all the corners not only take up the entity they are in, but also the entity's to the sides of them (think about it in your head. Get a block, with a square underneath it. Rotate the block, and you see that it doesn't fit in the square.)
Sorry bud, but you are going to have to live with it.

Right I thought about that, but I am talking just physical appearance, just like stairs take up a triangualr space, Im just saying that if we could flip those on their sides, so instead of the stairs you would have a stair that went horizontaly instead of vertically it would be cool. And to everyone else that has told me to live with it. Im living with it, I just thought Id bring up a cool idea that would look nicely in the game.

Ok, that image is very hard to put in my head.
as for the "just being graphical", wouldn't you think it would be weird to see a diagonal block and a normal block side by side?

I realized after posting that it could be difficult to imagine, just imagine the stairs.
if they are in a 2x2 square and you are looking at them from the side they would look like this
x=blocks o=empty space
This represents a staircase block from a side view.
x o
x x
Now just imagine you are viewing this from a top down view. So instead of it making a rising staircase you get pillars in a v shape. does that make more sense?
