Rice is a new crop that can only grow under certain conditions. 1: it has to be surrounded by water on 4 sides. 2: it cannot have water above it. 3: it needs a light level of 8 or more to grow. 4: it has to be planted on dirt. Harvesting rice gets you 1 rice, or 2 if harvested with a hoe. Rice can be planted to grow more. Rice grows in 5 stages, with each stage taking about 5 minuses.
Rice can be smelted to create steamed rice, which can be eaten for 4 health. Rice can also be crafted into a rainstick:
With cocoa beans being rice. The rainstick will call rain, with a 25% chance of being thunder. If in a suitable biome, there is a 25% chance of snow, too. EDIT: The rainstick has about 10 uses before it wears out.
Seems like a pretty good idea. I like how it would drop 2 if you use a hoe. Maybe like 1 if you use a wood hoe, a chance for 2 if you use a stone hoe, 100% 2 if you use an iron how, and 3 if you use a diamond hoe.
Sound too similar to wheat. There needs to be something about rice that makes it a completely unique item; And not just in how it grows but how it behaves. And what its function is.
As for the rainstick, I don't think the player should be able to control the weather. Partly what makes minecraft so good is how you are not really in control of the minecraft world, you are simply finding more elaborate ways to survive it. And the uncontrollablity of weather reminds of that.. in minecraft.. and in real life.. so no, no rainstick.

Please stop crying. I can't interrogate you while you're crying.
Great idea. But I do not like the rainstick, it seems it would be really glitchy.
But the rice is really nice, but you should only be allowed to harvest it with a hoe.
The better the hoe, the more rice you get.

Retired StaffAlso not sure about the intense growing requirements.
In conclusion: Not a great idea, but I've read much worse today.
