The Nether looks evil and stuff, but isn't that difficult, just frustrating. There are only two types of mobs. The Nether is not self-sustainable.
The current suggestions all make the Nether similar. Sure, it has lots of lava and maybe slighly harder, but you still mine to get stuff to mine to get stuff etc. etc. I propose that in the Nether there are a bunch of difficult mobs which you can kill to get resources.
Lighting:Mobs only spawn in darkness. Therefore, lava and torches only give off one light. This also means glowstone is important.
Mobs:
Shadow souls: They are mobs that have 2 hearts and do 1/2 hearts damage. They are common and drop 2-4 dark soul and maybe 3-7 shadow. Shadow souls look like orbs that are black. However, so they are visible, they give off a low light
Behemoth: These are like elephants, but more dangerous sinister-looking. They have 25 hearts, and they charge to do 5 damage and huge knockback, but when they're not charging, they stand still, making them easy to be hit.
Items:
Dark soul:Combine this with glowstone dust to get a pure soul
Shadow:A usuful tool in many crafting tools
Pure soul:This makes two glowstone dust, but also has some other recipes
Glowstone toolset:You can make a toolset replacing sticks with shadow and wooden planks with glowstone dust, strength and durability as wooden toolset
Dark scythe:Does 3.5 damage, crafted like this:
=Dark soul =Shadow
Light bow and arrow:Does 2 damage, bow crafted like this:
Arrow crafted like this:
=Shadow =Pure soul =Glowstone dust

I do feel like the Nether could use a revamp. There isnt really much to do and quite frankly i never go in except to get netherrack but its so easy to get i just get a few stacks and im good for ever because I dont use much
Netherrack, pigman, ghasts, soulsand, glowstone, and lava lakes.
The problem with the nether is that I was able to list everything unique about it in one line.
And, Netherrack is aesthetically useless and functionally dull, pigmen are pointless, Ghasts are annoying, soulsand is glitched and useless; leaving glowstone which is the nether's singular contribution, and the lava lakes which are cool (well... hot) until you figure out it is just an obstacle between you and the glowstone.
Squid men. It's a squid with a humanoid body attached. You'll note that is somewhat of an homage to Illithid/Mind-flayers, but since AD&D themselves stole that idea from Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, I don't think there's much of a danger of copyright infringement. The idea of squidmen has a nice visual tie in with Ghasts, who are basically giant squids themselves. They fire green burning orbs that both damage you and slow you down for a few seconds, as if you were walking on slow sand. They are always hostile.
They have a random chance of dropping one of three things: Flint: 59/64 chance, Obsidian 4/64, and Iron Ingot 1/64 chance, You'll note that these are items are exactly what you need to construct a portal to escape the Nether, if for some reason your old one is gone.
As a side note, the nether definitely needs a always hostile mob. There are caverns inside the nether, but they're hardly the monster ridden places like in the main world. The Ghasts can't attack at you there, and while there may be zombie pigmen, if you leave them alone, they leave you alone. Strange that that safest naturally occurring place in all of Minecraft is inside a world modeled after Hell.

What resources do they drop?
Flesh out your idea a little more.

Try killing a ghast without a bow :smile.gif: , that is difficult enough to make you SEARCH BEFORE DOING A SUGGESTION.
