I think flares should be added into the game, for single player they don't serve much purpose, but for multiplayer it would be a nice asset to finding lost players or so. i m not sure what the recipe would use but i'm sure gunpowder would be involved some where. I know i get tired of losing my friends in a world and have to teleport them to me. This would make finding each other in a short area around you very easy. The mechanics would be similar to snowballs being throw into the air and arcing.
Sounds pretty good, needs a good amount more info on it like what is it made out of? how do you make it? etc. And also, for SSP, it could be shot down dark tunnels or caves to light them up for a moment so you can get a good look.

im not sure about in normal minecraft but im sure theres a mod for this somewhere
That answer is irrelevant.
On topic, I like the idea. Maybe it would be bright and visible from a distant, while not lighting up the area very much.

WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)

Ok, came across a little critical, I admit.
1. Why would you need to throw them up in the air when you could set a path of torches to where you want your friend to be?
2.Flares first do sound modern. They could not be though.
3. I'm not sure how hard this coding would be. We are able to put a torch down and just easily able to light up everything. But a flare would be moving, and the calculations would be a lot harder to do. I think Notch already said that it would be impossible(although cyrect proved him wrong) to do something where you could hold torches.
ok you must never play on a multiplayer server so im going to ignore the remainder of your comments,
Flares wouldn't be used to point a direction of which to go, but signal where you are, hints the getting lost portion of my idea.
Who cares how modern they are, theres TNT in the game, tnt was not a medival invention.
And lastly, duh the coding is going to be difficult. Thats not the point. The point is this is a suggestion Forum for new ideas and content, do you think the stuff notch thinks up instantly poof themselves into the game?
plus its shooting a glowing light into the sky that dims out, i don't have a clue what your thinking of but you need to go see how a flare gun works.

After he added smooth lighting he said it was possible to make moving lights. The topic of holding lit torches DID come up but Notch said he didnt like the look of it.
Half of this thread consists of trolls. Which sucks, because this idea has some potential. It's a pretty good idea, I guess, and it would be useful in SSP as well, considering you could fire it into a dark cave and light the place up for a few seconds.

First off, since when can you shoot torches in the air? And there were medieval flare type items, manly just a flaming arrow shot up in the sky.
