The topic description pretty much describes everything, but there's still a lot to say.
This option would allow you to backup your worlds ingame.
Clicking on that would bring up something that says "Are you sure you want to backup this world?", leaving you with the options "Yes" and "Cancel". Clicking on yes would do the same thing as copying. There would be a green bar, but it would say "Backing Up World..." instead of "Copying World...". Once it's done, it will simply go back to the ingame menu.
If you already have a backup of that world, it will say "Would you like to replace "[World Name]", or make a new one named "[World Name](2)"?". ("New World" was just an example. Your world might be called anything.)
If you made two worlds with the same name before, that isn't a problem. The world files are different in your actual 'saves' folder, so they won't be replacing eachother.
But when you make a backup of your world, it sends it to another option in the World selection menu called "Backups" or "World Backups". When you click on that, it will show all of the worlds you backed up before. It looks like the normal World selection menu, but with only two options: "Restore" and "Delete".
Deleting them in the Backup menu is the same thing as deleting them in the World selection menu. Clicking Restore would simply send that world into your World selection menu, allowing you to play it again. It would say "Would you like to replace "[World Name]", or make a new one named "[World Name] (2)"?", like it does when you try to create a new backup while there's already a world in your backups with the same name.
I thought of another idea, but I think backing up your worlds is better than this. I'll show you this idea just for fun anyways. But I'm mostly focusing on backing up your world ingame. Click on the spoiler to see.
This is kind of self explanatory, but I'll explain it anyways.
This would add a new option to the world selection, allowing you to select a world and click "Copy". After clicking on copy, it would say "Are you sure you want to copy this world?". Then it would leave you with two options: Yes and Cancel.
Clicking on yes would make it go to a loading bar similar to the one when you're generating a new world, saying "Copying World..." above the green bar. How long it takes to copy depends on the world's size. Then you can simply play that world.
I have a picture of what I think that would look like:
(The copy button is in the bottom left corner of the picture if you didn't notice.) That's the only picture I felt like making. It only shows what the copy button would look like.
(You might notice a few things in that picture.. Such as "Posting a new topic..." and the yellow fps numbers from Fraps in the top right corner..)
I also have a really small suggestion to add on to that option. This would simply let you scroll up and down while selecting worlds. Dragging isn't horrible or anything, but I'm used to scrolling. So that would be nice.
This is my first topic in the suggestions forum, so hopefully it's good.. I think it's pretty good, though. I'd like to hear what you guys think. I feel like I'm forgetting like, 10 things that I wanted to add to this thread, and it's annoying me. But this is all I can remember that I thought of, and it seems like it's good how it is.
not a bad idea, but i think its been suggested before.
I would have it so its not in the game menu, but at the title page menu
Yeah, that's probably a better idea. I mean, I think it would be useful if it was ingame, so you wouldn't have to get out of what you're doing just to back up your world. But that would work too.
I always find it annoying to have to exit out of Minecraft (If I haven't I can't edit the files) then find the .minecraft file, find the saves folder in it and open it, copy the world I want backed up, and paste it somewhere every time I want to backup a world.
