I mentioned this in another thread, although it apparently didn't get much notice there.
Anyways. My idea is that Endermen, if you were to keep your crosshair locked onto them long enough, would cause Visual and Audio distortions. For example, staring at an Enderman long enough would slowly give the screen the same distortion that occurs when entering a Nether portal, although without the purple swirl overlay image.
For audio, white noise or something similar could slowly fade into hearing, increasing slightly (but not too loud) in volume as you stare at the Enderman.

I support!
notch ONLY added these because he wanted a creepy mob. This sounds perfectly creepy.
PERFECT BAD IDEA!:
staring at an enderman long enough is how you enter the sky demension! (notch's version, the dream world)
EDIT: after thinking about it, this would make endermen less scary, if you wanted to go to the sky dimension.
Personally, i find notches idea much more disturbing (scary). That they just stand completely still and stare at you.
Well, they still just stand completely still and stare at you. The distortions are just supposed to represent your in-game character slowly going insane.

Yes! This is actually a really good idea, maybe not such violent waving as the Nether teleport distortion, but it should be something subtle; little swirls and waves rippling. Actually, I have a much better idea:
This but more subtle; the only things not moving are you and the Enderman, and the second that you look away, everything snaps into place and you've got a vicious Enderman on your ass.
<vid snip>
As for sound, I think that a really deep white noise would be perfect. Something that sounds like things moving behind a wall...

Either a more subtle version of that, or I was thinking of the waving of the nether portal but slower.

Ah, yes. Behind a wall. Reminds of the classic (well, I don't know about classic... but I liked it) H.P. Lovecraft story, "The Rats in the Walls."

No, thats a stupid idea. :sad.gif: Endermen wouldn't send you to the sky, they would just kill you or something from staring.
Not send you to the sky. Just make your character insane, and the delusions of his insanity would be the sky dimension.

I don't think it would be necessary. It is creepy enough to know that if you take the reticle off for an instant they charge. You'd be stuck in a staring contest. Distorting in-game reality might make players take it off the enderman which would reduce the creepiness.
This may be bad in that it would disorient the player and he wouldn't know whats going on, which isn't too good (notch want players to be aware of dangers). Anyways it probobly more scary to have them stare at you.

Creeper Jockeys, Because Screw Your Sense of Safety
A system could be added that allowed the game to tell if you relized the enderman was there. If it detects you saw it it trys to lock into a staring contest, charging if broken. If you dont agnolige the enderman it should slowly creep up behind you. If it gets within 5 blocks it charges regardless if you were to break a visual lock.

Even right next to the player, the endermen should freeze when stared at. If the player tries to back up, the enderman follows, keeping the same distance until the player looks away.

Maybe next time you sleep you go to the sky dimension, and after a day-night cycle in the sky world you suddenly wake up with the items in your inventory (or on the ground if it was full)
Notch haven't confirmed that the Sky Dimension will be a dream world. It was only a suggestion.
Not dream. Delusions of an insane person.
Totally different things.
And then Herobrine eventually comes and rescues you from insanity by killing you in the sky dimension, as it turns out Herobrine is the locked away part of Steve's subconscious that will allow him to recover from the Enderman's curse.

Old signature got imageshack'd.

Just by seeing the Endermen.
Yeah. Still the same behavior, just with visual and audio effects.
Sky Dimension: More family-friendly name for insanity.
I literally lol'ed
I hope notch sees this!

it's not the sky, it's a dream world.
Starring into a alien/zombie/you-don't-know-what-it-is could make you go insane.
well, only 2/4 people like my part of the idea, but notch decides anyway.

Makes it harder to focus while staring at the Endermen.
Also makes it creepy (the exact thing Notch wants).
Not dream. Delusions of an insane person.

No, not really.
