I'd like to toss a simple idea out there, solar panels. When the light level on a solar panel is above a certain amount, it generates a redstone current.
"But what would you use this for?"
That's the beauty of Minecraft... we can only imagine what people would use this type of tile for. The first idea that comes to mind for me is a door that automatically closes at night, so you could have a patio that 'opens up' during the day and seals up bunker-tight at night. Or in multiplayer, perhaps a trap that activates if someone brings a light source into an area, pistons dropping them into a lava pit when the light from their lantern hits the panel.
What would you do with a panel that generates a current when exposed to light?
