Firebranch trees are simple, they like to be set on fire. Every tree spawned has a 0.1% chance of being a Firebranch, distinguished by red leaves and black wood. For a tree so rare, it is definitely profitable.
A single log can do the work of 8 lumps of coal, being able to smelt a full stack! However, normal harvesting methods will not produce saplings. the only way to get saplings is to set it on fire. Sure you lose the logs and other trees may be set on fire, but saplings will drop from the leaves this way.
The logs cannot be crafted into planks nor smelted. Also, they require an Iron Axe or better to safely harvest this tree. Anything else and the tree will light on fire... and you don't want that!

Maybe the tree could set players and mobs on fire (on touch) but not actually start fires. Ever since the fire nerf it's not such a big deal, though.
It's a good idea, but it deviates from the main purpose of this suggestion: a rare tree that only drops saplings if lit on fire. Such trees do exist, actually, just head over to Yukon/Northwest Territories to see them.

I like this idea a lot. To make it easier for new players to know that they can't axe the tree without a good axe though, I'd suggest making the tree take much longer to cut down with improper tools.
Also another sub idea, just to mull over, since the trees only grow well with fire, wouldn't it be interesting if they only spawned near surface lava?

Excellent ideas! However, the tree doesn't drop saplings unless you set it on fire. Otherwise, you grow it like normal. Maybe you misread that. Perhaps it can be immune to lava and grow in abundance in the Nether! How does that sound?

I play Slave Hack, give it a try!
Not good idea. What if it appears in the middle of a forest that you spawned in? That would suck.
EDIT: Perhaps it would require an iron axe or better to mine, or else it will burst into flames?
Random chance to explode.
Just cut down all the trees within 3 blocks of it. This will prevent fire spread.
EDIT: && fire got nerfed so as not to spread as much.
Exactly! That was one of the strategies for harvesting this tree, especially if in a forest
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
