Since slimeballs now have a purpose in the game it makes sense that slimes are no longer a "treat" to find like they used to be, but are rather a nessecity to fully enjoy the game. So what I'm suggesting is to only make small slimes persistent in the world. Everthing else would be the same (only appear below y=16, 10% of chunks, 10% spawn chance). Not only will people who have never seen slimes before actually find them, one could coral them in pen and have a little slime farm, and who doesn't want that!?

That and I think that slimes should be more common. I found only one slime in the 10 months I've been playing.
Well if small slimes are persistent then they would just spawn and wait to be discovered. So if you have a mine the slimes would spawn and they'd stay there until you find them.

Slimes are common enough if you know how to find them. We do need a way to track down the chunks ingame though. I don't like having to use a 3rd party tool or just pure massive expansion to find a single mob with an item that has 1 use.
As for the idea itself I could see this preventing other mobs from spawning. Maybe small slimes can spawn in 33% of the chunks at level 16 or lower instead? The old rules would persist for bigger slimes.

I tend to agree with you here, slimes seem somewhat rare (granted, underground 'slime farms' can be built, but even the spawn rate on those is low compared to that of other mobs. However, I don't think they should be found all the way up to the surface. Perhaps from 32 on down, with an increased rate for 16 on down. That way slime would be easily attainable as you adventure through caves, which is what I spend most of my time doing. Notch has always been against tedium in games, so I think it likely that we will see their spawn rates improved. Then again, pistons find most of their use in complicated contraptions not really related to a purely survival gameplay style. Also, they are not quite as much of a necessity as a luxury. Maybe they ought to be a challenge to find. The only problem is, a lot of things can be difficult to come across (I'm looking at you, diamonds!)

I get what you mean, I used the slime finder and it felt like cheating, but I really needed slimeballs. Part of the reason I wanted small slimes to be persistent is I know people like to keep them as pets but they despawn if you exit the game or get too far away.

I would like them to be a tamable alternative to wolves (I don't need those irritating meat shields).
