I just thought I'd share an idea I had about the way that Endermen attack and behave once they've done so. I'd love it if this idea became popular enough for Notch to have a look at it and maybe even impliment it!
Well-- when I first heard about Endermen, and saw the picture of them, I thought of only one thing: Slenderman.
If there's anybody out there that doesn't know who or what Slenderman is, I suggest looking for the page on knowyourmeme, or looking on youtube for the channel "MarbleHornets".
That said, the idea for Endermen is-- that they attack in a similar way to Slenderman. In the MarbleHornets videos, Slenderman appears to the characters and just sort of lethargically stands and watches them. When Slenderman is shown moving, it is always exceptionally slow. Slenderman is however, shown to be able to cover long distances extremely quickly, much like how Endermen can teleport. At times, when the characters from MH are fleeing from Slenderman's original appearance, he'll show up in the background during their flight, as well as appearing again when they believe they're safe.
So let's say you've encountered an Enderman. You look at him from a distance, and then your crosshair reaches him. He stops moving and turns to face you, and will remain unmoving as long as you're staring at him. If you move, the Enderman will begin to move very slowly in your direction, but as long as he is in your sight, he will not gain speed. This makes you able to stay out of harm by walking backwards, but you obviously can't see where you're going.
The real terror starts when you turn away. The Enderman will teleport to somewhere within your sight, and continue to move towards you slowly. This means that you have to dodge him if you want to continue to run from him, but he'll only teleport in front of you again if you do. This means that encountering the Enderman won't be quite as upbeat as Notch envisions, the chase won't be quite so fast paced, but based on the blog post about trying to instill true fear, I think this comes closer to hitting that mark.
Imagine running from the Enderman, and as soon as you reach your shelter and turn to open the door, he appears inside, and begins to approach you. I think that's far scarier than the Enderman sprinting at you and running you down before you have a chance to appreciate how terrifying it is that he's begun to chase you.
Let me know what you guys think, this is just a random brainstorm I've been having, thanks for reading~!
An interesting idea (although this is about to get torn apart by people who will say that posting a suggestion for something that is likely all figured out by now is pointless). I would personally combine the two. I would say that they do everything you said. But they only move towards you slowly until you attack them or they get within 8 blocks. Then it goes full on blitz on you like Notch said.
Just my two cents.

Share an idea? Well I'm afraid it's easy to find this very idea you've explained further-than-needed on how they work as people keep posting it.
I actually haven't read into other people's ideas about them at all, so I'm sorry if my idea is a common one-- I find that creating a thread and disregarding the posts that are simple put-downs is easier and more effective than adding a post to a huge thread about a similar idea.
True. You aren't supposed to make a thread on an idea that has already been suggested. The stuff people are posting on the other discussion boards is from Notch's blog on how he is putting them into the game. The OP is stating what they would change from what Notch is doing. Unless someone else has made a suggestion about changing how the Enderman moves and attacks in the Suggestions section, this thread is valid and not breaking the rules. If there is a thread already in the Suggestions section like this, please find and post a link.

Maybe enderman could have an attack where he stretches his arm but doesn't actually attack, making you want to turn around and run, afraid of what would happen next.

ModeratorActually, this is different than how people have been posting they will attack.

That wasn't what I posted. My idea is actually the opposite of this.
