So yeah. I think everyone agrees that Minecraft start doesnt make any sense. Who the **** punches down a tree with their bare hands? The game needs a lore. I know the game is still in beta, and this probably has been suggested before. I just dont really feel like scrolling through 1410 topics .
Anyways, on to the point of this topic : My suggestion.
You would start out in a small hut, that would contain a chest and a diary. In the diary would obviously be the start of the lore, kinda like if anyone has read the BnB guide to minecraft.
Im no good at lore, as my grammar isnt the best and my imagination in these things isnt that good.
But really something like this : First the diary would tell about how did the writer get here. You would find out from the diary that there is a axe and a pickaxe. It would give you the information on how to start minecraft. It would also tell you of the evil that lurks in the Overworld. Later on you could find another diary about The Nether.
Please read this http://bnbgaming.com/2011/01/01/an-illustrated-guide-to-minecraft/ , to give you an idea of what i mean by the diary. Obviously with a few modifications to fit in with the rest of my suggestion. This would make the game alot more newb friendly, as when most people get minecraft they are lost like ZackScott when he first played minecraft. I think all of us who didnt watch any tutorials had the same feeling.
First of all, starting in a hut with a chest hands the player easily into the game, with out any initial need to do anything at all. Instead of finding there own preferences for how to gather resources and create a base, they become uncreative and lazy with no need to do anything to survive the coming night.
Second, handing the player a pointless book of lore with how to do stuff completely destroys the discovery in minecraft, as well as the ability to make up what you want about the world. Players should be free to explore the world and shape it as they want with out the ambiguously created rules in a pre-generated diary. If players want to know how to survive, they should expose themselves to the abundance of unofficial guide on the internet.

Now thinking about it, i agree with you on the hut thing. Lets forget that. But the lore book i want to keep. It wouldnt wreck the feeling of Minecraft, since you would still discover everything by yourself. But while doing that, you could find info on Minecrafts past, mystical stuff and that. Some scary ****, get the feeling that someone else has been there. I explained it a bit wrong on the post. Sorry about that, its hard for me to find the words im looking for since my english isnt that good.

As to the idea, I don't think it fits with the general idea Minecraft has been running on so far.
