This was a passing thought, and it might not be that great but... What if there was more than one kind of armor that could be worn per slot? A sort of... Light armor? I don't think all pieces of armor need a light slot, mind you. Like, boots and helmets are fine. There is no real need for anything lighter, but... What about leggings and ESPECIALLY vests? I gave it some thought, trying to think of a recipe and design that would reinforce the idea that it only protects the important bits and came up for a simple design for lighter vests.
= Leather = Variable
It's just a leather strap with a sleeve for the arm and wraps across the chest. A single plate goes over the heart to protect the vital area. It still leaves you very exposed so the protection is minimal, but if you're hurting for ore and can't make proper armor, it's better than nothing. The leather in the design is constant. The only thing that changes is the variable slot for the plate over the heart. At the lowest level, leather, you'd use stone for the ore. The other ores represent themselves from there on. Gold for gold, iron for iron, and diamond for diamond. The quirk with such a design is that it's very durable compared to similar armor at the leather level, but very fragile at the diamond level. So a diamond helm would out last a diamond plate, but a leather plate would out last a leather helm. This is mainly due to the constant use of leather in the design. Durability isn't buffed nearly as much with upgrades.
Hmm, maybe this would be good for the new adventure update. Instead of making it 'lighter' armor, we called it critical armor. Armor designed just for the critical areas. It's lighter and easier to make and provides protection from critical hits... BUT! It's less protective and durable compared to normal armor. Just some thoughts.
I love your idea - I believe that particular garment is akin to a harness or sash, maybe? Cut out the top and left leathers for crafting and you sir just earned yourself +1 support

Hahaha, That's hilarious. I just realized what they would look like.
Oh, these two... So funny... Anywho, I never mentioned a recipe for lighter pants as I've yet to think of one that seemed decent. So yeah, that's still up in the open.
PS. I uploaded some concept art of the chest plate.

Assless chaps.
Interesting idea, although I don't know if it is needed. Armor is basically useless at this point anyways, at least from what I've seen.

From personal experience... and a recent ambush by three creepers while in iron armor, I can safely say no, no it is not... ~smolders a little~ It's a life saver and every little bit helps.

Now I don't have to find eight diamonds to make some armor.
