Nether Portals and Aether portals are cool.
But. BUT, I think you should be able to place them on the floor instead of standing them up. WHY?
---
Sometimes the sound of the Nether Portal really creeps me out and it's annoying as well.
So I'm thinking:
It would be easier to jump into the portal on the floor, and to de-activate it, you simply pull a lever, and pistons under the ground push up, moving ground blocks into the area where the portal was.
The only problem about this is that you cannot re-activate it. So, now I'm thinking...
There can be a chest on the side with a Flint and Steel next to it.
YAY!
So that's my idea, I think it would be more convinient. <--- Spell fail.
Also, it would take up less space and you could make a house out of Nether portals :biggrin.gif:
The downside is that it will be VERY VERY VERY VERY scary D:
Maybe it just doesn't work, maybe Portal blocks can't be piston-ed.
Instead, try moving the frame itself. Stand it up, set a piston to remove only one block from the frame, and still keep a chest for flint and steel.

That definitely won't work. Pistons are designed not to be able to push obsidian. Stick with the floodgate method (or shoving blocks into the portal if Mojang fixes that.)
As for horizontal portals:
Seems rather pointless as you fall too quickly to be able to fall through a portal. Anything you can do to a horizontal portal with pistons you can to to a vertical portal.

Pistons cannot turn off portals by pushing solid blocks into them though.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
