So last night I was lying in bed and thinking of Minecraft, and I thought: "Wouldn't it be nice if I could prevent falling to my death by grabbing the ledge I just fell off? Well, I did my homework, and I found that most of the previous topics were overpowered. So I intend to fix that.
Ledge Grabbing.
How it will work:
In the event of overstepping and starting a sure fall to your doom, You must turn around to face the ledge you fell of of as fast as possible. If you rotate swiftly enough you will grab the edge and pull yourself up. (Press space or forward) To late, well, I'm sure you can guess. But be quick about pulling yourself up though. Hold on to long, and you will lose your grip. *If a mob (Hostile or otherwise) steps on your hands while you are holding on, you will fall.
BUT WAIT!
What if this is to easy?
Well, I have a few ideas to solve this. 1. Involve crafting. 2. Involve chance 3.Involve a mix of both.
1. Crafting.
If just needing to turn around is to easy, then you must make an item. I call it the climbing glove. This glove is basically the Metal Cestus from Assassin's Creed. In this game, It allows you a second chance when falling. When falling, just having this in your quick bar will save you. Turn to a ledge falling past and you will latch on. (Unless you're falling to fast already.) How it is crafted:
where = leather
(This is just an Idea, if you have a recipe, share it)
The use of this item in a fight will also increase punch strength. (How much is open for debate.)
2.Chance.
This bit is a tad more complex. Just a basic turn around and grab. However, your success is now not as likely. Chance of success is based on the material you grab on to.
Dirt: 30% chance of failure (Increased to 60% with rain)
Dirt with Grass: 20% Chance of failure (Increases to 50% with rain)
Smooth Stone: 40% chance of failure (It is smooth after all) Increases to 60% with rain
Cobblestone: 15% chance of failure (Increases to 20% with rain)
Gravel: 80% Chance of failure (Increases to 100% with rain)
Wood: 20% chance (Increases to 30% with rain)
Log: 15% Chance ( Increases to 17% with rain)
Ore blocks (Smelted and ore): Same as smooth stone.
Obsidian: Same as dirt.
Bedrock: Same as stone
Mossy Cobblestone: 30% (Increases to 40% with rain)
Half blocks: Same as Smoth stone.
Those are the values I have come up with. (these are also open to change)
3. Combination of both.
I have a few ideas for this option.
1. You could have the percentages higher without gloves and have them decrease to what they are now with gloves.
2. Make ledge grabbing impossible without gloves and add these percents when you have them.
3. Have these percentages without gloves and eliminate them with the gloves.
One last note.
Perhaps this could also allow you to climb blocks you cant jump on.

Ignore the underscore lines. There place holders.
Where = you
Thats my suggestion!
Thanks for your time, (It took a good chunk of mine) tell me what you think, and don't forget to vote in the poll!
Elaborate more on the numbers, how far would you have had to have fallen before you can't grab a ledge? What height can the block be to be able to climb it (I'd suggest something like .5 blocks above usual jump height - if that makes sense)?

I would say only two blocks for climbing.
As for falling to fast, probably falling damage speed is the limit. So, Five if i remember right.

No. I can't use mods.
Not to mention, posting "there's a mod for that is a warn-able offence"

Retired Staff3 I think. As for the climbing thing, make it kind of lengthy (time wise) and you have my imaginary stamp of 'quite balanced' approval.
Alright. Thanks for the input.
I beat you to it, But thanks anyway.
