Behavior:
Dark One's roam around only at night. Like most aggressive mobs. Unlike other mobs they do not instinctually attack players. They are gatherers, they will wander in packs searching for specific block types. They will wander in a pack until they are within X blocks of the specified resource type. At this point they will some what randomly dig towards the area. While they are "locked on" to a resource node, they will be defensive of the area, against all mobs and players. Additionally they will approach and attack players carrying said resource in their inventory. A player may relieve their supply of the resource, or battle the group.
Establishments:
Dark Ones will return to "caves", as Dark Ones will ignite in sunlight just like zombies and skeletons. The group size of Dark One herds vary based on the size of their "Cave" which relates to how much of their desired material they have gathered.
Potential Additions:
Helping Dark One groups could have added usefulness where, when the colony reaches a certain size, they produce certain items or block types, which the player could sneak or kill their way in and secure for improvements.
Hypothetical: You read a thread in the Suggestions forum. You suddenly realize you've seen the idea before. Maybe it's a duplicate? No. Maybe it's just you? No. Maybe it's been done already? Very likely: Click here if there's a mod for that.
Personally, I'm hoping that these are the inhabitants of the NPC villages, and that they hold blocks because they build their own town.
That said, stop suggested things for an idea that is already in the works. Notch and the rest of the team will make it however they are already planning to make it.

In all respect I appreciate the feedback. The funny thing is, I feel like this condescending tone is what kills the wonderful nature of this community. Funny enough that Notch just thanked people for making suggestions or ideas about the mob. The creative and open nature of this game should be paired all together with the willingness to accept others input. I feel if anything, minecraft is the last place for elitists.
Oh I wasn't talking about hoping or directly making the mob shown behave like this. I should have been more clear, it was an inspiration to an idea I had. I should Edit the OP because I don't have any thoughts on this being something of 1.8, I was simply just inspired by it.
