The block could be an ore as a block, crafted, or a natural material. I'm just explaining what it would do and how it's used.
The "weight block" would not work like a pressure plate. It's simple: it sends off a redstone charge if the weight in the block above it changes. For example:
Taking something out or adding something to a furnace.
Mining a block.
Sand/gravel appearing or disappearing.
Taking something out or adding something to a chest.
Using a crafting table.
Placing a block.
Eating part of cake.
Even more!
It does not detect entity weight. If you step on it, nothing will happen.
What is the weight block used for? Well, for one, chest/furnace or private crafting table protection. The blocks around the chest would be sand on top of TNT. There is a weight block in the ground under the chest. It sends a signal to the TNT above an underground water stream. The TNT falls and so does the sand and you. You find yourself in the water stream, then dying from the TNT. The dropped items/looted item will go down the water stream and onto a wooden pressure plate, sending off an alarm on the surface. This could notice a mod or admin of a server that someone was stealing so they check who just visited the spawn point to see who just died. They are jailed and you can go to your water stream to collect the looted item and their dropped items and put them in the chest. Set the TNT back up and continue. :biggrin.gif:
There could be many other uses for redstone contraptions. What do you think and what should this "weight block" be? :smile.gif:

I am meowing at my lung’s fullest. I would even argue that the echo that reverberates back to me is the voice of someone I know…
I'm curious as to how it can detect a slight change in the weight of a cake but a human's weight won't trigger it but I like it.

Curious idea. Not sure how well it would work for containers, but it did make me think of one way it might be useful in redstone contraptions.
What if the distance that the power traveled was directly connected to how many blocks were above the weight block? Three blocks on top would send a charge through three pieces of redstone, for instance, up to a maximum of the usual 15.
This, combined with pistons, would allow for a single wire to activate different sources.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways
Hypothetical: You read a thread in the Suggestions forum. You suddenly realize you've seen the idea before. Maybe it's a duplicate? No. Maybe it's just you? No. Maybe it's been done already? Very likely: Click here if there's a mod for that.

Sounds good. You could also just choose to use a repeater to make it go as far as you want. :smile.gif:

Think of it as a scale for blocks. It reacts to the weight on it. Putting a cake on it would send a signal. Then each time you eat the cake it would send a signal.
We don't need something that does this and a pressure plate. Plus, we can't do this with pressure plates because they're not full blocks.

It could be a good addition but it would probably be used exclusively. I can't honestly see any application for your beginner to intermediate players who mess around with redstone. It might be possible those crazy kids who build computers when they are bored might find a good application for said device. Its one thing to add new possibilites, but you want to try and introduce something that can easily be used by your beginners but still versatile enough for those wiz kids :smile.gif:.

Just my 2 cents.
wut?
It's not difficult at all. Here's a very simple contraption.
= Weight Block
You don't see the trap. If you steal from the chest, the "weight" inside the chest changes, thus triggering a redstone charge from the weight block. It sets of the adjacent TNT, making it fall, following with the sand block and you. You never see the TNT but hear it. The next thing you know, an explosion kills you. It's can booby trap of protect your items, crafting table, house, cake, and more. It can also be used in random contraptions that aren't exactly used for something.
It's a simple detector.
