**Keeping it short as I can without overdoing it**
Desert shrubs, aka the miniature and very dead little bushes you see in the desert, should drop 1-4 sticks when broken.
WHY
The desert is an extremely unrewarding place in real life and in Minecraft. In fact in Minecraft it offers no considerable advantages over forests that can be found in close proximity thanks to the lack of considerable biome size, except an abundance of sand for glass, although sand harvesting can be done without a desert home.
Downsides to the desert include the fact that there's a significant lack of trees, flowers, pigs, sheep, cows, and caverns. The sand itself is also a major downside that makes digging difficult at the surface. So deserts need something to make life a little more exciting, because there's no reason to go to one...save for the novelty of being in a desert. A shrub doesn't exactly solve this but it alleviates it to some degree.
HOW IT'S BALANCED
This would not be an issue of balance. It would simply make the desert more of an acceptable alternative to living in forests since the desert lacks the many necessities a forest has in exchange for cacti and some extra sand. Plus you're not harvesting diamonds, you're getting 1-4 sticks.
SHRUBS
Understandably some people don't want their decorative shrubs gone by people who want some sticks. Using seeds on sand will yield a shrub to stop this.
REALISM?
I punched a tree. My hand bled and I now have a deep scar from the bark lacerating my knuckle. True story. TL;DR:It's a game where very few elements are realistic. This doesn't have to be either, and even in itself it is somewhat logical.
Really good suggestion, but sadly I'm pretty sure it won't be implanted in-game, not sure why, because this is a a great sugestion, and it would make the biomes a litlle more balanced, but there is info that biomes will have changes in 1.8, and maybe this sugestion won't be needed. But for the actual version, this idea is really cool.
+1
I can hear you but you never know;there might be nothing whatsoever.
Completely pointless. If you want sticks, chop a tree. If you're in a desert, find a biome with trees. The point of biomes should be making each one useful in its OWN ways, not making every one a copy of the rest.
Besides, dead shrubs do not consist of sticks.

Hypothetical: You read a thread in the Suggestions forum. You suddenly realize you've seen the idea before. Maybe it's a duplicate? No. Maybe it's just you? No. Maybe it's been done already? Very likely: Click here if there's a mod for that.
Buckets don't consist of a physically impossible vacuum-black hole system that allows you to store thousands of liters of water.
* :dry.gif: *
But yeah, it's MC, and a game. Realism doesn't count for much and it makes SOME sort of sense (obsidian, hard you say?).
Plus it would make the desert more helpful and unique while keeping it as... a desert. No other biome allows you to get just sticks in such a matter;trees take time, and although trees give more there are times where a simple stick or two helps and for usefulness the desert is the only biome where you can't do anything thanks to the lack of wood that shrubs could help. So it is useful and unique.

You can get sticks from trees. Sticks are not unique. Making biomes possess pointless and redundant qualities does not make them useful or unique.

The point of this is for people stuck in deserts to have sticks, And therefor making deserts less like "That pile of sand over there with nothing of use for me" and more like "land of tough miners who punch dead shrubs to get their sticks"

"Only a few find the way, Some don't recognize it when they do. Some don't ever want to..." ~Cheshire cat.
You would still need planks in order to make a pickaxe. Maybe cacti or sandstone could be used to create tools with the same strength as wood ones? Or perhaps wood tools--which don't make sense being able to mine stone--could be replaced with flint tools?

Nobody is ever stuck in a desert. If they are, they should try this thing called WALKING.

For all you people who are FLAMING, please STOP IT!
This is a really good idea. The biomes with trees still have "uniqueness" because sticks can't produce logs or planks. This stops the unfulfilled feeling when you break a dead shrub and you get nothing.
SEE, THAT SHRUB HAS NOTHING BUT STICKS AND TWIGS! NO LOGS OR BRANCHES! SO THEY ARE MADE OUT OF STICKS AND TWIGS!
the unfulfilled feeling when you break a dead shrub and you get nothing.
It's a dead shrub. Just what the hell do you expect?

Dead shrubs have sticks, you know.
No need to be rude.
Also, Another way to survive in the desert is to make a house of cactus. Just surround yourself with cactus when you first spawn, and collect all the cactus you need. Place the cactus in a 10 by 10 range, and break a cactus and close the door by stacking cactus.
I don't know, There is a small area between cactus and I'm not sure if you can squeeze through. I think you could manage to do that, but I believe you would die in the process without food. Zombies and creepers don't have food.
It's a dead shrub. Just what the hell do you expect?
Sticks, lizards, ants, termites, small rodents, tortoises, plant disease, random items caught while being blown by the wind, and entangled sheep.
But, it is JUST a dead shrub.
How would a few tiny lines of code using items already in the game detract from the uniqueness and utility of a forest, be any sort of waste of the dev team's time, or be illogical in any way?
This idea is brilliant if you ask me.
Simple, Easy to implement, Logical, Somewhat Useful/Convenient, and not Game Breaking in any sense of the phrase.

It'd be a waste of their time, however little time it would be, to add something players can already get by walking a few steps to a tree.

OT: This actually sounds good, except they should only occasionally drop just one. That way people couldn't farm sticks in a desert.
Stop breaking the rules.

Actually, someone else a long tome ago posted a suggestion (whole nine yards; pics, ideas, etc.) before the shrubs came out. He had the originality to make cactus tools. It was made into a ___. It is against the rules to say those 4 words "made into a ___" without other words in between, so I'll let you guess on the missing word. Ask the person who made it if he/she should also implement it.
Well we're up to full release and deserts...God, they're just pointless.
There's just no reason to go into them. They're so dead. They have NO redeeming values. There's basically a reliance on food now, and good luck getting THAT in a desert. There's no water, no dirt for farming, no animals, no weeds for seeds, no trees, NO HOPE AND NO HAPPINESS.
And 1.8 made them worse because you can't just go in for the novelty of it anymore unless you are supplied with EVERYTHING you would already have in any other biome. Other biomes got aesthetics like swamps, which got lily pads. The last thing deserts got was shrubs.
This and a few other things are needed. Sure, it should be tough to survive in a desert, but it shouldn't be IMPOSSIBLE like it is now if you aren't supplied completely.
I would only just want the dead shrubs, not the sticks. I might plan to use dead shrubs for decoration. Maybe you can put the dead shrub into a crafting table and it made sticks. That will work better

Just because the shrubs basically are just sticks, they won't aways be structurally sound enough to use.
