Redstone should activate more things like mob spawners; for example, when a current is provided to a mob spawn, it will spawn a mob at that exact moment, could be handy for something like a trap or a dungeon event.
Perhaps it should go further and work on jukeboxes to; to start a song when a button is pressed, could provide useful too.
-Redstone should melt ice when current is provided.
-Current applied to netherrack will light it, it should be a toggle between on and off.
-Etc.
Melting ice and lighting Netherrack is pointless and makes little to no sense even by Minecraft standards as redstone does not generate the necessary light for melting nor fire for lighting. The rest is good.

light=/=heat
(I know minecraft only uses light when it does things like melt snow, but that could just as easily be changed)
as it is right now, there isn't really "heat" in minecraft. Either something is on fire, or it's not.
Exactly. Minecraft only uses light. And redstone's generated light isn't enough for melting ice. Plus it's a completely pointless function to add anyway. And adding heat for such a pointless function is just a waste of time.
As for Netherrack, I'd rather have a placeable "lighter" block that faces a direction and will ignite whatever's there when powered by redstone.

Also, regarding the powering of mob spawners, there is only one problem I can see.
I will now turn a hypothetical skeleton dungeon into a mob trap. It gets me a few bones and arrows, not enough to be worthwhile. I now add a rapid pulser onto the mob spawner. I can now build houses out of bones.
You could make it a bit overpowered, in my opinion.
Solution: Collectable spawners. Collected spawner =/= natural spawner. Redstone only works on collected spawners.
Plus you can already do that now, it's just a slower process.

Ah, so you could mine spawners. Sounds a nice idea. The only problem is, how would they remember that they were a zombie/skeleton/spider spawner when in your inventory? There is only one ID code for the spawner.
Well, if they added collectable spawners, that would obviously be an issue they dealt with. Maybe the same way the game stores wool color (damage value)?
Of course, there are other potential problems like griefing, but I don't wanna hijack this thread refining the concept so if you'd like to continue this, my inbox is open.

Actually, spawners originally could be retreived by mining them, but would always turn into pig spawners.
And being able to move the spawner just makes the infinite amount of mobs you can rapidly create easier to exploit.
Mojang is perfectly capable of balancing it.

I apologize if such a thread was already created.
