First off, I'll apologize in advance if this has been posted, beaten to death, buried, and recycled as tinder before. Now on to the show.
Redstone circuits are potentially fun feature of the game. People have done some really amazing things with them as they are and my hat goes off to them. However, the way things are currently implemented, using them is overly convuluded, buggy, and more than anything else, annoying.
The game is in beta, so bugs are par for the course. No complaints there as things will get fixed in time.
The unnecessary complication is what I think needs attention. All we need is one "official" block to make things vastly easier. A NAND gate. Any other logic gate can be made by wiring up one or more NANDs. Look how much easier things are now with the addition of a redstone repeater. A NAND block would do similar for the rest of people's creative contraptions. The circuit gets smaller in many cases, less complicated, and easier to build.
It's true that redstone has a tendency towards clumsiness and other vices. What fixed the whole concept for me was Eloraam's series of mods, which you can find here.
The "Integrated Redstone" mod contains a series of block-sized gates, among them a NAND gate for your enjoyment.
To install the mods, you'll have to install her RedPower mod, which makes redstone able to attach to any side of a block among other things.
Also; I'm pretty sure this should be in the suggestions forum.
Yep. Any and all suggestions have to be in the suggestions forum (unless they are achievement suggestions). Redstone suggestions are included.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works
Also, I use quite a few compact gates without having NAND gates in them. In all honesty, if this were to be made, I probably won't use it.

I'd rather see a...T flip flop? I forget what all these things are called.

Hypothetical: You read a thread in the Suggestions forum. You suddenly realize you've seen the idea before. Maybe it's a duplicate? No. Maybe it's just you? No. Maybe it's been done already? Very likely: Click here if there's a mod for that.
I say dear chap, NAND gates are far too complicated for basic wiring needs. OR, NOT, and NOR are already easy and intuitive to make, allowing users to play around with various combinations and learn for themselves. Limiting redstone to one basic gate makes it impossible to create redstone devices without a basic understanding of boolean algebra.

Thoughts?
Cheers,

repeaters were even easier.
