-Crafting a feather by itself on a crafting square (possibly with a stick or sword to sharpen it) will give a quill. This quill will allow you to write.
-Black mushrooms; these work like other mushrooms, but they spawn only in the nether, but grow faster, and can be brought to the regular world to make farms.
-Pestle and Mortar; these are crafted like below, with smoothstone.
Right clicking while wielding one will bring up simple Input->Output boxes. Put a black mushroom on the input and get black ink on the output. This item will have maybe 64 uses, so you can make a stack of ink for each Pestle and Mortar you make.
-Nail; Crafted with 2 iron ingots in a row, give 4 nails. You can place the nail on a wall.
-Paper; You can right-click a bit of wall with a nail on it to begin writing. You will need 1 black ink per line you write and the paper has 10 lines. The writing should be more user friendly than signs and chat. You can use the arrow keys to go back to correct mistakes, and using up the last character will move the word to the next line. It should have a "Save" feature, allowing players to leave before they are done and get ink. They can right click the paper to finish. There should then be a "Done" feature, that will take your ink and make the paper permanent. (At least until it is broken off).
-Books; Books work like paper, and can be written in by right clicking them. Under the pages are left and right arrows that allow you to flip between up to pages (depending on how many have been written), but crafting the book on a crafting table with (left to right) book, slimeball, and a stack of 17 paper will allow for up to 20 pages to be written. When writing in the book, there is a title box at the top. Writing "Story of Herobrine : Chapter 7" in the title will change the mouseover name of the book to: Book- "Story of Herobrine : Chapter 7".
-Bookcases; Right clicking a placed bookcase with 10 book slots. Three of them will start out filled in from the 3 that you put in when crafting it, but the rest need to be made separately.
You can have up to 4000 lines of text in a bookcase. This could potentially take up alot of space if massive libraries were constucted, so server admins should be allowed to put a number of text lines allowed in the server properties.
I think these ideas would give uses to alot of items in the game that don't have much use already. Please give me feedback and ideas in the comments.
Why a black mushroom when squids have ink sacks? Also, look for the suggestion titled: "The Arts"
It has this and more.

Ink sacs are for dying wool. Also it would make nether trips more worthwhile.
Items can have more than one use. I'd rather have 1 item with two logical uses than 2 redundant items.

I was thinking this to! So the Quill is a good idea, but there is no need for a black mushroom when we have inksacks. How about we have a quill and an inkwell crafted like this:
= Ink

Battlefield is better than Call of Duty, and you know it...
I support the quill, it would be very helpful to be able to write in books or on paper in Minecraft ( would help with adventure maps, server rule boards, etc.)
But I also agree that the ink should be made from ink sacks.
