I recently read an idea about a snowman mob that you can craft as an allied mob, to help you battle enemies much like Wolfs. While having a snowman fight on your side does sound a little silly, mobs that you can construct is an excellent idea.
CRAFTING MOBS
Now I know what everyone's thinking at the moment: Yeah, you can build a robot out of junk, but what makes it work? My answer: Redstone. Since redstone is already the mythical dust of power, it would only make sense to use it as a power source for man-made mobs. It wouldn't go out like coal, which makes it much more efficient, and would work for all constructed mobs, robot or not.
Crafting mobs would not be an easy feat, it would take elements that are fairly rare and/or difficult to obtain. This may include elements from the Nether, or important blocks that only have one use, like TNT. This game me the idea for a robotic Creeper. There are so many other possibilities with this idea!

i like the idea, but having them never run out of power seems like it would just be to much. Industrial craft added batteries to the game, use that idea imo. Also it should drain the battery FAST. It's like telling the game to do things for you, which isn't really gaming.

Or use a material already implemented into the game: coal. But I still think redstone is a good fuel for them, and don't worry about their efficiency, they would still have a lower power and health from the player. Like wolfs, but with a harder way to heal them. Pork wouldn't do.
Why do they have to be mechanical? Pull out some necronomicon bullcrap... mix bones, redstone, a book (full of dark magic crap, you see), and some string to hold it all together and create a skeleton buddy. That seems to fit the theme better, and frankly steve never looked very smart to me, I don't think he could build a robot...
No. You don't need allies. The combat's easy enough.

Hypothetical: You read a thread in the Suggestions forum. You suddenly realize you've seen the idea before. Maybe it's a duplicate? No. Maybe it's just you? No. Maybe it's been done already? Very likely: Click here if there's a mod for that.
Unless you get ambushed by 3 creepers and a spider jockey.
True. But that will never happen to 99% of players, and only to the 1% if god and their families hate them.

Sorry that I didn't specifically imply that part, I only gave robots as an example. But really, you could create golems, skeleton "buddies" as you said, stitched dummies, snowmen, etc.

Remember when Notch said he would add an experience system with the adventure update, and that the higher you level up, the more mobs spawn and attack? Craftable allied mobs would be very helpful then, saying that you would need some skill to gather materials to make them. It also fits with the rouge-like gameplay, similar to summoning.
I love it. Maybe you would have to craft each body part separately on a special workbench and then stick them together to create your ally in the off position. Deploy it from the inventory, then right click it with a wrench to use one coal. That powers it for a day. When it takes too much damage, it just reverts to item form with 0 durability. It gets one durability per second and upon reaching 600 (ten mins) it can be deployed again.

Edit: Or it could be destroyed.
