I tried to see if anyone put this idea out here already, but nothing is immediately apparent.
I've found that sitting by slow-running tasks such as mob grinders and cactus farms is tedious and detracts from the playing the game itself. However, leaving them and pursuing other tasks (say, mining or mob hunting) causes a waste of items, as the drops will decay after five minutes.
What I'm thinking of is a craftable basket which, when placed, will act like a chest with a small number of inventory slots (Definitely no more than ten). However, unlike chests, any item which touches the basket would be automatically added to the basket's inventory. So, dumping four stacks of dirt onto it would automatically add the dirt into the basket. Breaking the basket would dump everything out and return the basket.
Water should flow over them normally, which would make it possible to create a chain of baskets for great storage capacity. I'm not sure if it would be more feasible to make them work only from above or simply draw any item which touches them inside.
I can imagine it would be created like a chest, but with sticks along the top rather than wooden planks.
Allocator. It's a much better suggestion, with many more uses.

Good idea!!!
Though I think that water shouldn't flow over it, because it's a basket!!!
I think that the "basket" should be a halfblock, and the "handle" should act like torches, and are able to walk through.
Also I think that the basket should have 5 slots, because that's how many items you can get from hostile mobs.
Reply if you agree!!!

Interesting. Can't say I found that. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that you need to have both a chest, open space, and the Allocator to catch items. A temporary basket might be a good way to do a quick job
This is what I get for not taking more than five minutes searching

Well that's the point. I could see your idea working as well, as it has very limited storage capabilities. You could use this for little jobs and the allocator for big ones. The additional space and item usage makes it a tad more balanced. I do have to agree with the other guy who said it should be like a half block and water can't flow over it. That would make it a tad more balanced imo. As of now you could just make several of these in a row with water flowing over them.

So how large do you think it should be? Obviously it should be able to hold stacks, so maybe no more than five (as suggested by Buddy).

Personally I think just having grinders and automatic farms takes away from the game.
True. I find a world with a small farm that requires me to go and actually harvest and replant wheat, planting a bunch of spread out saplings to return when I need wood, and stuff like that is a lot more enjoyable. But other people like the opposite side of things as well.

That's probably one of the best mod too. Adds stuff that people actually want to the game.
