I was playing Minecraft this morning and decided it would be nice to have a border around the screen as you play. For example: A royal, fancy texture pack could have a golden border with blue and red engravings. A dark, mysterious texture pack could have cobwebs in the corners. As a challenge, it could be all black except for the center (Like in old Zelda games where you needed to light a room). Of course, the GUI screens would not be affected by the border. It's only the world view. Minecraft itself would not have a border, so it's not changing current game play.
How would you make a border for your texture pack?
Simple. The texture pack folder will include "border.png". It starts out as a transparent canvas the size of the average Minecraft screen. You can edit it for your texture pack and Presto! You have a border!
What use would it serve?
Your decision. As I explained above with the dark room example, it could be used for challenges. There could also be notices or an emblem in the corner, showing the texture pack's name or it's creator's name so when you make a video or screenshot people don't have to ask which texture pack it is. The simplest answer would be decorational purposes.
Am I forced to use a border?
No, definitely not. You can always leave the border.png as is or simply set it to the original if you dislike it. Remember, it's purely optional. An easier way to remove the border is to go to your options and turn Border to OFF.
This is unneeded. Why does it have to be implemented?
Remember, texture packs are optional and they give the player more customization to their Minecraft world. Borders are exactly the same, so why aren't you questioning texture packs?
Whoever voted for "Maybe, it sounds like it would interfere with gameplay", keep in mind, it's 100% optional and can be removed by yourself from any texture pack. I'm not arguing against your opinion, I'm just letting you know. :smile.gif:

I am meowing at my lung’s fullest. I would even argue that the echo that reverberates back to me is the voice of someone I know…
Interesting, but unneeded. If you want credit for your texture pack, put it in the sample image or the name

I don't think texture packs are needed, but they are nice to have.
Thanks for helping me prove my point. Adding an optional feature to an optional part of the game is illogical.

It's IMPROVING options for texture packs. For example, the image that shows up when you select your texture pack. It doesn't have to be there. Each one could just be a word like when you are selecting a world. But no, Notch adds an unneeded feature to make texture packs more custom. That's exactly what borders would do.

Edit the pumpkinblur.png file, then just wear a pumpkin all the time.
You must wear a pumpkin to complete your texture pack! You cannot wear a helmet, it's extremely inconvenient, and you need a pumpkin! Great idea! :smile.gif:
