In 1.8 animals down't despawn, so I was able to further explore my idea - better wolf packs.
A wolf in Minecraft spawns with other wolves, walks away, and the pack is no more. Boring, right? Well, what if I told you wolves worked like NPC villages but without building?
The chunk where the pack spawns is their territory. If you destroy it or build over it, the wolves will move to another discovered chunk.
Each wolf has a job when they spawn. Here are some job ideas I thought of:
Leader
Each pack has 1 leader. He sits and watches with the guards. At dusk, he howls, summoning the pack to their territory. That's when the hunters feed the pups.
Thank you tyson689 for the idea of howling!
Hunter
Each pack has from 1 to 3 hunters. They search for sheep and kill them. Upon the sheep's death, the wolf will be holding meat in it's mouth. No, it's not called "sheep meat". I'm sure Jeb said 1.8 will have baby animals, so "sheep meat" will have one of two names. If the wolf kills a lamb, it drops lamb. If a wolf kills an adult sheep, it drops mutton. Since these instantly appear in the wolves' mouths along with a small poof of smoke, you cannot collect them. The hunters will go back to their pack's territory and feed the pups.
Pups
Wolf pups, along with 1.8 baby animals, are spawned by a king and queen wolf by breeding. Wait, king and queen? This does not mean they are royal. Their job is to breed and continue populating the pack. A pup, like a wolf, is spawned with a job. Though, they will not perform their task until they are adults. They become adults after being fed lamb or mutton by a hunter. Each time a pup is fed lamb, there is a 1/5 chance they will grow up. Each time a pup is fed mutton, there is a 1/3 chance they will grow up.
Kings and Queens
Each pack has 1-2 pairs of kings and queens. They spawn together, made for each other. Though, if king and queen die, leaving 2 more, if they are not a pair they will become one. The kings and queen will breed every dusk. There is a 1/10 they will spawn a pup.
Guards
Each pack is spawned with 1-3 guards. Guards watch their chunk, or territory, preventing any other packs from attacking. They have the same strength as any other wolf.
Loners
A pack can spawn with 0-1 loners. They do not help the pack in any way. They hunt sheep for fun and act the same as wolves do now.
Tamed wolves
The same tamed wolves you know and love. Though, they are now harder to get. You can only tame loner wolves. There is no way to determine if a wolf is a loner unless you watch it's behavior or try to give it a bone. Once a loner is tamed, it is no longer part of it's pack.
Each wolf in a pack look the same, even the kings and queens.
If a wolf from one pack enters another wolf pack's territory, or at least near it, the guards will fight to the death. The successful guard will kill the rest or the losing pack, leaving it's pack victorious and left in peace.
What do you think? Please post if you have any suggestions/comments/questions! :biggrin.gif:
Instead of king and queen, why not call them the pack alphas, since that is the term they use in real life (it is right?).
Yes, I think that's the name. Though, I'm not going to name them "Female Alpha" and "Male Alpha". They would be the alphas, kings and queens. :smile.gif:
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I am meowing at my lung’s fullest. I would even argue that the echo that reverberates back to me is the voice of someone I know…
