Notch wants there to be a difficult to obtain goal to the game that will not disrupt the current mechanics for those not interested in that part of things, but will give some really interesting gameplay for those that are. I've thought of an idea that I think might just do the trick, and would explain the evil mob spawns in dark places.
Idea:
The world is under attack from the Nether world. The Evil <Insert evil person name here> seeks to <insert nefarious purpose here> and is sending his minions to your world. Even now his scouts probe for weaknesses!(explains regular zombie/skelly spawns). When night comes and the moon disappears from the sky(read: every configurable amount of days), he/she/it will have the power to send his minions through the Portals to take over the land. Nether portals "appear" the night before, and if the players do not destroy them, the monsters poor through in a continuous stream all night long. To stop the onslaught, the players must destroy the gates. Using explosives to turn them off only provides a minute of peace. They must destroy the portal itself or it will reactivate! Planning on staying safely behind your walls? Good plan. Except that creepers explode against walls that are blocking their progress toward you on this night. Oh, and the evil lord's sergeants accompany the evil hosts(tough, strong units). They have an increased line of sight to you, and can rally other mobs within a certain range of them to attack you even if you are beyond the rallied mob's usual detection radius. New flying baddies attempt to assault you on the ramparts of your defenses! All in all, this should make for a memorable night of survival fun. If you don't destroy the portals, you know where the baddies will be appearing next time, and can setup your defenses, giving you endless nights of fun vs the baddies.
But wait, there's more. The world needs a hero, and that hero is you. Use the portals to bring the fight to the baddies. You'll need to obtain/construct several extremely rare and powerful items hidden in the normal world, and in the nether before you'll be ready for this fight. Some of these parts are guarded by the evil lord's Lieutenants. These suckers really pack a punch. Once you get all the parts, you'll need to locate the evil lord's sanctuary in the nether, stock up on any extra items you think you'll need, and sally forth to kill the evil overlord. The fight will be a difficult one. Once that's done, the nether world begins to self destruct(random TNT style explosions, starting off slowly, but increasing in numbers, and getting closer and closer to the player(s). You've got a very short time to get the heck out of dodge, or in this case, the nether. Regardless, the nether is destroyed, all netherworld gates are deactivated, and there is no netherworld or nether-attacks for a configurable period of time. (Even forever). Once the time is up, a new netherworld is created, and the cycle begins again.
Don't want to deal with this? Not a problem, just configure the nether-attacks to occur never, and you'll just get your usual mob spawns to deal with.
This idea gives an opportunity to add interesting new monster types, boss monsters, a purpose to all this building beyond the usual creative side of things(which is fun in its own right), as well as making the head fill with ideas for new items that might be useful on such a quest. Lots of other cool ideas that could plug in to this. (Employ nurses and mercenaries from the upcoming NPC towns? New evil NPCs? (Vampires anyone?) New items of power? (Armour of defense, swords and bows of power, wands of healing... Lots of cool ideas here...)
go play a god damned cliche generic RPG. minecraft isn't what... THAT is. It's a great idea, just for an actual linear RPG game. not for a sandbox. EMPHASIS ON SANDBOX. it's a SANDBOX game. with TERRARIA FEATURES soon to come. I don't want to go on a string collecting trip and get violently raped.. IN THE BUTT. by a monster that's IMMUNE TO STONE SWORDS. Notch's ideas are good as is. don't try to push this into another generic MMORPG "F2P 24/7!!!" I would buy an rpg with your idea. I guess that this could be shortened by just saying "don't jam your rpg ideas into a sandbox game," but I'd like to deepen the general idea.

Your name is "tehpwnzerz" and you don't want to pwn stuff? =D
In all honesty, I think you need to relax and stop yelling. You don't like it, that's fine. Clearly, Notch's plans to make Minecraft (possibly) more Rogue-like are not for you. Creative mode will always be there, and if you read my post closely, you'll see I included a way for people to have the old behavior as well. Just in case you didn't want to get "pwnzered". =D I'm not talking about a total RPG conversion. I'm talking about a way to use the current mechanics in a non-game-breaking way to produce Notch's desire to have some sort of tough to accomplish goal. This does that, but still gives you options.
The more I think about this, the more I want it. Instead of creepers blowing up walls, perhaps the monsters construct siege weapons to blow up your walls. You then need to be prepared to blow these siege weapons up. Honestly, if Notch doesn't do something like this, I'll have to start making this as a mod. =D

Good stuff, yes?
I suggest you do a search for it.
