So what I was thinking was that since there awe swords in minecraft, why not a type of pole?
Pole:
It would be crafted by 3 of the same materials in a row. The available ones are Iron, Gold, Diamond.
Iron Poles act a bit like a sword, doing half of the damage of the iron sword. The difference is that it can defend you by Right Clicking. By doing that, it loses x2 more of the durability it would lose during an attack. Also, it does not protect you entirely. It will reduce the damage by 3/4th of the original.
Example:
Say I'm fighting a spider with an Iron Pole. I right click as the spider's attacking me, and I take less damage. But I then realize that the Iron Pole has lost quite a bit more durability than it would have if I hit the spider.
TL;DR: If I crafted a pole, and right clicked whilst being attacked, I would take less damage, but the pole would lose less health.
Mechanics of a pole:
A pole can defend you, but it will never, NEVER, completely defend you. You will always lose a bit of your health. Even if you use a diamond pole, and block, you will still lose x2 of that durability of the pole, and you will lose some health nonetheless.
HOWEVER...
Let's say I'm wearing full diamond with full durability. If I block while attacked [this will work with any tier of armour against ta weak mob, by the way], I will still lose that durability on the pole, but I won't take damage.
TL;DR: Poles will always lose durability if you block.
Poles Misc. facts:
If you use a Pole while it's not blocking against anything, you will not lose durability. Poles can also not break blocks. Another note is that Poles cannot block against swords, meaning it won't work very well in PVP, or fighting against Zombie Pigmen. Poles knock both mobs and players back a bit further than swords. Poles are also much weaker than swords. They reach 1/3 of a block further than a sword, meaning it's distance is 1 1/3 of a block total.
Being as its main use seems to be defensively, give it a bit more reach than swords too (like, half a block more) that way you can keep things at a distance.
Thank you, Aztec, for improving this thread. I didn't think of it.

I think you should be able to block swords, except with wood and stone poles. When you say "Pole", I'm thinking a light pole or something. I don't know, but I just kind of envisioned a metal light pole without the light being used. Maybe rename it Staff or Bo staff. A Bo Staff is a martial arts weapon (I have two, and their made of wood. Heavy wood. And I'm a Black Belt.) that looks like this:
In the hands of someone trained with it, it can cause much more than a bruise. I didn't want to say deadly since Martial Arts aren't intended to be used aggressively or to kill someone (That's why they are referred to as "Self Defense techniques".)
WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)

Actually, the idea intended on adding a type of staff as well, but that idea died out because of the lack of creativity, and the fact that I couldn't think of any way to describe it except for "spear".
I'd say this would work better as a Bo Staff or a Quarterstaff. I personally own a very nice Quarterstaff and they are fun to use and can do a serious amount of damage. But I would prefer a shield instead of a new weapon that can attack or defend.
Off Topic: Pole and Polearm weapons are the best weapons for close range combat imo.
