We're all familiar with how mining and breaking blocks work as of now. You hold down on the mouse button, and cracks appear. If you let go, the cracks go away instantly, like the block was never punched in the first place.
What I'm suggesting is that the cracks stay if you let go. You could continue mining the blocks, and the damage would slowly revert if left alone (1 minute to totally heal, tops). This would make it less of an annoyance if you accidentally released the mouse button while mining, especially obsidian.
I'm also suggesting that certain mobs graced with arms should be able to bust blocks, albeit slowly, and only the softer blocks. They could only punch through Dirt, Grass, Leaves, Wood, Planks, Stone, Cobble, Mossy Cobble, Wool, Sandstone and ores. They shouldn't break through furnaces, chests, and other goody holding blocks, and not the two hardest blocks in the game, bedrock and obsidian. This would put a focus on defending your house, and not just camping in it until all the monsters are sunburnt to death. This would be disabled in Easy.
To repair a block, you could finish mining the block, and replace it, wait for it to heal itself or tap it with a mallet. The Mallet would be a new tool, made of iron, that can remove cracks from blocks with a right click. It could not repair blocks currently being eaten away by monsters, only ones that are left alone. The mallet would be crafted with this pattern:
I like the first idea, but we already have a block-breaking enemy: The creeper (Dun dun dun!)
1. Creepers don't die in the light, making them a threat to you even during daytime
2. They are programmed to go where you travel the most, which is most likely your house
3. They can destroy multiple blocks, making them more efficient than a stupid zombie trying to claw through stone.
4. They offer a powerful reward if slain, making hunting them both risky and rewarding (though handcannons/muskets could increase said reward further.)

WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)

Instead of having the cracks go away in 1 minute there could be a limit to how many blocks can be damaged at once. For example, in most FPS games the bullet holes in the environment tend to disappear after a certain number has been reached. The idea of having a tool that is used primarily to get rid of accidental cracks in your house or something probably wouldn't be a very fun addition...otherwise, a decent idea

Creepers can't detonate through walls, can they? With zombies and skeletons clawing through your house, it makes it so that you can't just sit in your house or in some 2-block deep hole.
Many good suggestions you guys contributed, though.

If there is a block missing, they can. But, even if they can't "See" you, when day comes, and you walk outside, a creeper sitting in a corner or right next to the door suddenly jumping out at you isn't very pleasant, and the early-morning surprise will likely tear a hole in your wall, even if you aren't dead.

Blocks repairing after time (or as soon as you try to mine another block, like in Terraria) might make this work okay.
I'm going to disagree with adding any new tools that don't have many useful applications.
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
