I've always thought Minecraft's hook is that it combines adventure with building, that you have to collect your resources. If you're not playing in Peaceful mode, you'll have various enemies to contend with. We currently have two main ways for dealing with them - Melee and Ranged. But what if there was a third one? Magic.
My idea is that you can find Crystal embedded in rocks and can mine it, like an ore. You can then use it to craft a Magic Staff. The Crystal would be roughly as rare as Gold. It's made like this:
= Crystal
It's essentially how you'd make a shovel, but it makes a staff because it uses crystal. With the staff, you can use a generic spell that looks like a grey sphere that flies straight. If you click, it will do 1 half damage. If you click and hold for 2 seconds or more then it will do 1 heart of damage and if you click and hold for 4 seconds or more then it will do a 2 hearts of damage.
However, you can collect runes of different colours which can be used like ammo and have different effects, although they inflict the same damage as the default spell. They can also be mined and are found with varying frequency, except for three that must be crafted from other runes.
1= Click, 2= Hold for 2 seconds + and 4 = Hold for 4 seconds +
Red Rune - Shoots a fireball (Like a Ghast's.) 1 - Shoots fireball, doesn't set anything on fire. 2 - Shoots bigger fireball, sets small area on fire on impact, fire goes out after 3 secs (even the fire on a player.) 3 - Shoots biggest fireball, makes small explosion on impact and sets fairly large area on fire. Fire goes out after 10 seconds.
Blue Rune - Various effects to do with water. 1 - Makes a 2x2 grid of floating water source blocks in front of the caster that act as a shield. Blocks disappear after 5 seconds. 2 - Makes a 3x3 grid of floating water source blocks in front of the caster that act as a shield. Blocks disappear after 6 seconds. 3 - Makes a 4x4 grid of floating water source blocks in front of the caster that act as a shield. Blocks disappear after 7 seconds. Also shoots a blue sphere that turns into a water source block on impact.
Yellow Rune - Minecraft's lightning. 1 - Shoots the lightning bolt found in thunderstorms, but vertically (from the staff to the target.) 2 - Shoots the lightning bolt found in thunderstorms, but vertically (from the staff to the target.) If it hits another player then it makes their screen flash to white for 2.5 seconds. 3 - Shoots the lightning bolt found in thunderstorms, but vertically (from the staff to the target.) If it hits another player then it makes their screen flash to white for 4 seconds. Also sets target on fire, but the fire disappears after 2 seconds, even from player.
Orange Rune - Crafted from a Red Rune and a Yellow Rune adjacent on the crafting grid. Lava. 1 - Shoots an orange sphere that turns into a lava source block upon impact. The lava and any fire it created disappear after 3 seconds. 2 - Shoots an orange sphere that turns into a lava source block upon impact. The lava and any fire it created disappear after 5 seconds. 3 - Shoots an orange sphere that turns into a lava source block upon impact as well as fire surrounding it. The lava and any fire it created disappear after 7 seconds.
Green Rune - Crafted from a Blue Rune and a Yellow Rune adjacent on the crafting grid. Leaves. 1 - Shoots a green sphere that turns into a 2x2 grid of leaf blocks on impact. 2 - Shoots a green sphere that turns into a 3x3 grid of leaf blocks on impact. 3 - Shoots a green sphere that turns into a 4x4 grid of leaf blocks on impact.
Purple Rune - Crafted from a Blue Rune and a Red Rune adjacent on the crafting grid. Obsidian. 1 - Clicking gives all blocks within a 5x5 grid the durability of Obsidian and a purple tint for 10 seconds. 2 - Clicking gives all blocks within a 10x10 grid the durability of Obsidian and a purple tint for 12 seconds. 3 - Clicking gives all blocks within a 15x15 grid the durability of Obsidian and a purple tint for 12 seconds as well as giving the caster the same effect for 3 seconds.
White Rune - Light. 1- Shoots a white sphere that heals 2 hearts on impact. 2 - Shoots a white sphere that creates a 2x2 block of white blocks that heal 2 hearts when walked through. The block lasts 2 times walked through. 3 - Shoots a white sphere that creates a 2x2 block of white blocks that heal 2 hearts when walked through. The block lasts 3 times walked through.
Black Rune - Darkness. 1- Shoots a black sphere that damages 2 hearts on impact. 2 - Shoots a black sphere that creates a 2x2 block of black blocks that damage 2 hearts when walked through. The block lasts 2 times walked through. 3 - Shoots a black sphere that creates a 2x2 block of white blocks that damage 2 hearts when walked through. The block lasts 3 times walked through.
The first three blocks are not as common as Iron but more common than Gold. The last two are as roughly as common as Gold. This means that the runes are rare and the magic won't be too powerful.
The only way to resist magic and any effects it has is with Crystal armour. This is created in much the same way as normal armour. It has poor durability. Crystal Blocks can be made from 9 Crystals. Note Blocks make Xylophone sounds when placed next to Crystal Blocks.
Summary
You can mine magic runes that act as ammo for Crystal Staffs, made from sticks and Crystal. These runes have various effects and most do damage in some way. The Crystal can also be used to craft various items.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that it sounds complicated, although I can imagine it being implemented. I suppose it could be limited to the one standard spell like a bow only uses arrows, but I felt that the runes offered variety. Perhaps the whole click and hold thing should go and each rune should just have one effect?
