Seeing that gunpowder or black powder in it's early form is just a combination of Sulfur, Saltpeter, and charcoal. I was wondering if it would be possible to create deposits of sulfur even if it only formed around lava pools. Then we were able to take buckets of sea water boil it out and get salt. I know that salt is not saltpeter however I don't think we need to go that far. Then we could take coal. Mix say two of each item and get four gunpowder.

Thank you for your incite full posts on my topic. They were very well thought out and provided me with a great amount of corrective criticism. As to the too easy comment; what if we said that sulfur normally spawned only 1 maybe 2 blocks by lave or even in the nether. We could also change the amount say one of each item gets 1 gunpowder? For the "this is stupid" comment sorry I will try and make suggestions in the future that are more up to your high posting standards.
Yes I do, saltpeter is a common name for potassium nitrate. you can make it buy collecting waste and boiling it down. I just thought salt water would be better. It would be very difficult to make a sword out of diamonds so there is a bit of suspended reality in the game i was just trying to come up with something with out them having to add a lot to the game. they could use redstone instead of sulfur but i felt sulfur would be a nice touch around lava.

We don't know that Minecraftean water is salty. Also, as others have said before, sea salt is sodium chloride, t\which is not the same as potassium nitrate.

I stand corrected. Then we could just implement Bats into caves and there could be a layer of guano on all the stones. Guano is very high in KNO3. So we use that coal and sulfur?

Kinda gross, but plausible...
