It seems very impractical to have a line of redstone traveling right next to a track in order to alter something along it. Why not create rails that act as redstone circuits? They could be made simply by putting redstone dust over a rail on the crafting grid. This would allow changes in or near the track to occur, without an annoying redstone circuit running down the side of the track. Comments?
Technically powered rails already do this by continuing a charge through the rails. Just put a redstone torch next to all your powered rail sections and this thread becomes insignificant.
I like this idea as well. It would be a nice, compact way of carrying a redstone current along a track without wasting resources on making extra booster track pieces, or relying on the presence of a minecart in order to carry signals via detector rails.

What if you use the powered rail as brakes sometimes? Or have a configurable switching station? Then this becomes relevant again.
Need to be able to put repeaters on tracks like this too for balance and coding reasons.

Although their main purpose is for boosting, they also conduct redstone charge and power other tracks.
