This was a recent idea of mine. A mixed ore tool works and functions like any normal tool, but with 3 main differences: Look, use amount, and damage output (in the case of a sword).
As we all know (or should know), a pick is made of 2 sticks, and 3 of the same kind of material as the head. For example, a stone pickaxe is made using 2 sticks and 3 cobblestone. Now, imagine you're in a new world, and can't wait to start mining, but your stone picks wear out too fast and you have no luck finding any iron ore, save for one. Instead, you attempt to make a pickaxe using 2 cobblestone and one iron ingot. The final product? A stone/iron pickaxe. It would take 2/3's the durability of a stone pick, and 1/3 the durability of an iron pick, and mash them together. Also, because it is not 100% steel, it couldn't mine more valuable ores. The look could be something along the lines of a mostly stone-looking pick, with 1/3 of it being steel, either swirled in or dabbled in by a few pixels, covering about 1/3 of the pick. This would give the pick the ability to be used longer before breaking, but all of the materials used must be steel or above (in durability) to mine diamonds, redstone, ect.
As stated above, the durability is calculated by adding the durability of whatever amount of ore used to the other ores durability, creating a slightly stronger pick, axe, sword, ect. I.E (I know this stats are wrong, just for example) If a normal stone pick has 300 uses, and a normal steel pick has 600 uses, then in the above pick, 200 of those would be added from the stone durability, since 2/3's of the pick is stone (100=1/3 of 300), and 200 would be added from the steel ingots durability, since 1/3 of the pick is steel (200=1/3 of 600), creating a pick with 400 uses, 100 more than the average stone pick.
This whole idea would allow players to craft stronger tools without sacrificing all of one type of ore, I.E. your only 3 diamonds, and give unlucky player chances to have better tools earlier on, with giving them too much power in the tools as well. Also this idea wasn't made for me because my resources are sparse. I tend to find A LOT of iron ore. And this doesn't just go for something as simple as that. This could also be used to make, say, Iron/Diamond picks. This way you get more durability than usual without having to sacrifice all your precious diamonds, for example, 2 iron and one diamond. And I'm not too short on diamonds either, I just don't like using them often due to sparsity.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pistol+Ammunition:
I'm sure this has been posted before, after being seen in the sticked tutorial thread, but I thought I'd post my own design with ammunition. The pistol would be made using 5 iron ingots, and one flint. It would be built as below, with F=Flint, I=Ingot, and X=Empty:
I I F
X I I
X X I
My other design was 4 Ingots, one flint, and one wooden stick. S=Wooden Stick:
I I F
X S I
X X I
The stick would be the trigger. I also made ammunition, which is made of one Refined Ore, and one Gunpowder, placed side by side horizontally. O=Refined Ore (Can be Flint, Gold, Steel, and Diamond), G=Gunpowder, and X=Empty Space:
X O G
Can also be reversed. For each crafted, 5 bullets are made. This would probably also require a slot in which you will place the bullets you would be using. This can also apply to the common "Multiple Arrowhead Types" concept, so if that was also implemented, it would have more than one use. If you run out of ammunition in that slot during a battle, the next strongest set of bullets will automatically be equipped. In order from weakest to strongest: Flint, Gold, Steel, Diamond.
For people telling me about gun mods for the pistol idea: I like Vanilla Minecraft. Mods look cool and fun, but I prefer just plain Minecraft, and I figure a pistol would add another weapon. As for people asking for a damage value, the pistol, when using flint ammunition, would deal 2 hearts of damage, but be more accurate, since bullets aren't as easily affected by gravity. Every step up in ore used would add 1/3 more damage, gold bullets doing 2 and 1/3, steel doing 2 and 2/3, and diamond doing 3 hearts, while again, still being more accurate than the bow. You could also alter this idea by making a basic looking rifle, and even adding maybe a scope, keeping damage the same as stated before, but also giving it a lower fire rate, like 1 shot every 2-3 seconds for balance. A bow could be used for more moderate ranged battles, while this can be used to pick off a mobs health more accurately and efficiently thanks to the damage boost, assuming you're using gold ammo or better.
I would like to hear feedback from anyone who was nice enough to read through this monster post! :smile.gif:
Mixed ore tools are 100% pointless. If you can't find iron, you're playing the game wrong. End of discussion.
Pistol...Meh. No damage values suggested or anything. Way to go.

Hypothetical: You read a thread in the Suggestions forum. You suddenly realize you've seen the idea before. Maybe it's a duplicate? No. Maybe it's just you? No. Maybe it's been done already? Very likely: Click here if there's a mod for that.
Someone has already made a gun mod which has pistols in it.
Which doesn't matter because this is for suggesting items to be in the game without mods. Also this is a wishlist and most of these I have already seen suggested (The mixed ore tool idea is new to me, but Nyxion is right).

Iron Ore has a .55% chance of being generated instead of Stone under level 62. No world is sparse on any ore, it just generated less where you happen to have looked for it. That doesn't mean there isn't a high concentration of it 100 blocks away, 10 blocks away, or right past a block you decided not to mine.

I updated the post explaining it more, as it's not that I'm running low on iron, it was more a durability based idea. I also know about gun mods, but I'm talking for a Vanilla Minecraft update. Please re-read the main post, if you don't mind.

Okay, so now your excuse is: "I have the resources but I don't want to use them all!"
That's a part of the game, did you know? Nobody likes a hoarder.

I'm not afraid to use them, but I'm also trying to make some extravagant things. I would like to be able to make diamond blocks. I mean, I'm not trying to build an entire building out of them, but using them as accents would be nice. The whole factor of getting unlucky and finding hardly any iron can come into play, but another use: You only have one diamond. You could wait till you find two more to make a diamond pick, or you can make a slightly better pick, if you're so impatient.

Or you can suck it up and make an iron pick until you get enough diamonds, like the game intended. :sleep.gif:
And once more: If someone never finds iron, they're playing it wrong.

Even still, it was mearly just a suggestion for people who like to conserve, or in your words, "hoard" resources (which btw ended up saving me, getting cornered by 3 creepers with a iron sword is NOT fun), because I had resources to go back on.
Any comments on the re-thought up pistol btw?

"Conserve" here having the meaning of "screw the game's mechanics of progression for their own lousy reasons"...
Added accuracy, damage easily capable of cheapening the already too-cheap combat, scopes...No.

I'll admit, the scope was a little over the top. How about this: To make it balanced, each shot does 1 damage (assuming you're using flint ammunition, keep the increase by 1/3 heart damage for a maximum of 2 hearts), but no gravity effect. Also limit the fire rate to 1 shot per 1/2-2/3 a second, so you can't spam it as much as a bow. Sound better?
