(The topic is not finished, this is just a preview of it)
Have you ever been deep into a mine far away from home on your lucky day, those days when you find huge cantities of ore, or just very varied times? Its great, eh? You have your pickaxe, some torches and sticks, and all the ore you've mined, until realize that if you die you can lose EVERYTHING you've gotten so far, and guess what, you forgot wood or a chest to put things into, this may be one of the most annoying things that can happen, because now you can either:
A)Go back home(which is VERY far away) and get the needed resources. -OR-
B)Make dozens of furnaces to store your stuff in the fuel/smelting slot.
This, my fellow miner, would add another option to the list above;
C)Use just 9 iron and make an iron chest, saving yourself the trouble of both of above.
Yup, an IRON CHEST, we've got iron doors, why not chests? This could or could not be opened by redstone only, most probably not as its just an emergency resort.
They would look nice in a modern ambient too, so they could also be used for esthetic purposes.
The recipe could be the same as a normal chest, but in iron ingots instead of planks:
A picture of how it should look, the same as wooden chest, but iron-ier:
You mentioned Iron Doors in your post, as a backup point of the chest idea, yet there are no Iron Hatches. A good idea would be to make Dispensers, not Furnaces. And i see no other point of adding an Iron Chest other than what you pointed out, which is hardly a point.
Sometimes you get screwed, it doesn't mean there should be an item for it.
This is a pretty good idea. It'd be nice if these iron-chests could be locked with a key, somehow. The key could only work with the chest made by the player, so other players cannot open it.
I'm not sure how coding that would work, but if it's doable I'd like to see it in the future.

Some of my other ideas:Power Chests
Please show your support or ideas on how to improve it.
Why would you fine a tree, what did it do?
Anyways... Why couldn't you just find a tree and punch some wood?

Retired StaffSometimes you get screwed, it doesn't mean there should be an item for it.
Because you're underground and probably lost in a series of caverns.
