A problem for Minecraft players who do a lot of exploring or have a lot of houses/structures that are far away from each other is getting lost. It has happened to me before, and really limits my range of exploration. Although killing oneself and re-spawning back in the most recent spawn point is effective, you lose the items you have with you. I figured a compass that you could set (maybe by pressing shift or something) would be an easy solution to this problem. Maybe they could be possible to label (for example, Mine, House1, roller-coaster, etc.) Anyone have any thoughts?
look at the mod called zanmini map , it works like a compass it lets you set way points for different places i,would be nice if it was incorporated into minecraft itself
well , making a map will make the place you crafted it ( obviusly your base or house ) the center , so finding it would be easy.
Also , before the map update , i was in this situation tons of times , the way i solve it was with crafting a chest , i put all my stuff there , make a tall dirt pillar and then just jump to kill myself , i respawned on my house and then i just tried to find the pillar and my chest was just there , with all my stuff.

I did that too, it just seems a bit annoying after a while
Yes a speciall compas is good, possibly to make it point in the direction of where it was crafted, or as you said, being activated somehov. To name it is good and helps to keep them apart if you crafting more of them.
Gott anny possiply crafting recipy? I suggest having a normal compass but put redstone arund it in the crafting grid.
That would work. Or a single diamond in the center, one redstone dust just beneath it, and iron in the rest.
I say just a better map system, like someone said above. Zan's Minimap is an excellent tool; although it makes maps and compasses more or less obsolete, it fits the needs of the Adventure Update perfectly, IMO.
hmm. Good idea, needs some tweaking. Yes, you should be able to mark locations, but if your underground and there is at least 8 ( Numbers may all change ) Iron blocks, with in 5 layers, it will go crazy and be incapable to use until you leave the area, thus making it SLIGHTLY more challenging, but not greatly.
