I have heard others saying that Notch is planning to remove the F3 feature from the game.
So I suggest an altimeter. It would measure the height you are at. It would be crafted like:
where red wool is either glass, iron, or cobblestone, the red mushroom is redstone, the slab is a pressure plate, and the stick is a lever. Selecting it in the inventory will bring up a scale that tells you the height from 1-128, with every 16 being numbered.
Now, on to its second use. The altimeter can be crafted with a compass and paper like this:
:Flint and Steel:
where the bookshelves are paper, the Brown Mushroom is a compass, and the Flint and Steel is the altimeter, to form a chart. The chart works like a map, but it fills in the map based on the blocks around you at the time, not at the surface, making it handy to map cave systems. It also shows the current altitude in the top right corner of the map.

I never saw any post saying Notch would remove the F3 feature. In fact, he added to it. See the new variable?

Dammit, my bad.
No I meant to put it in suggestions.
