You know how in the items.png, when you draw an icon, it becomes 3D in-game and is shaded on the sides to make it look 3D when you hold it, why not do that with paintings?
If you don't understand, if you edit a painting to look like a red circle/ a blue circle with red outlines, instead of being a circle with the wood coloring on the sides, (or whatever you use for the back of a painting) it would have red sides, and as for the back, it would crop the wood texture to be a circle (it doesn't have to be red or a circle, these are just examples)
This would help with a lot of texture packs, and the look of minecraft in general.
