These bugs will fly around, and occasionally light up a few blocks around it. This may be useful for finding your way around. You can also leave a light trail. It would be no different than torches, really, except a few things I get to later. You can capture them, and put them on the ground in glass containers. They will light up occasionally, like I said, and light blocks around them, though if captured and put in a container, they still in that block and light up. You can capture multiple fireflies, using a container, made like this:
If you try to catch them, though, and you have some in the container, there's a chance some will escape! The more you have in it, the higher the chance they will. Right clicking on a firefly will possibly get it into the container. Right clicking on the air will release them all, so watch out! Right clicking on a block will place the container on it, though it can only be on the top of a block. Also, putting string on top of the container in the crafting table will make a stringed container, letting you place it on the bottom of a block, good for something like a chandelier. If you can kill one, (which they die in one hit but fly around fast), it will drop light goo. Using light goo with a slimeball will make sticky light, letting you place light on ceilings, walls, and floors. Like the idea?
EDIT: They will stay in the same spot when lighting, so there won't be a problem with moving lights!
I mean, I catch them in real life. I sometimes bring them inside, turn the lights off, and just watch them fly around and light up. I didn't know about you guys, so it doesn't have to be that way, just what I do. If you liked it, you could like it. If you don't, you don't.

Catching them, not so much.
