I think that water in the larger bodies especially "oceans" should be considerably more transparent. Light should also pass through water at any level. After you get down a few blocks deep in large bodies of water.. its dark as all hell. I agree with many other suggestions that there needs to be more things in the waters; fish, sharks, etc. My current problem is that its just too effin dark to do anything down there, and obviously. We run out of breath rather quickly usually leading to death or darn near it. So of course an eventual breathing apparatus of sorts.. even something like the gillyweed in the Goblet of Fire book from the Harry Potter series. Gillyweed
Here are a few shots of what I mean:
You can see outside in the light and at night.. but after a certain point in the water.. its just black and dark. Light sources only do an efficient job of putting off light underwater if the light source is behind glass.. if just lightstone is put there. Its kind of pathetic IMO.

What do cave noises mean?
Nothing. They're just there to scare the **** out of you.

If this is a hut, I would hate to see what a house is.
There should actually be different kinds of water. Clear water, murky water, normal water, etc. Now that would add some dynamic.
Agreed, but I'm trying to think within the realm of actual possibility of something I think should be taken into consideration for addition in future updates of Minecraft.

It could be treated like biome grass. Grass kinda blends in certain biomes, why not water? Salt water, fresh water, muddy water, see what I'm getting at?

Was I helpful? Of course I was! I can prove it by you clicking the green plus in that there corner =D -->
I don't think it should let light through at any depth, maybe it could lower 1 light level every 2 blocks in water. That way it stays moderately bright until about 16 blocks deep. Also, maybe just changing the transparency would suffice.

Why not if the light source is at the bottom of an ocean, where i've started to build my underground city. I think light should pass through much better than it does. I agree with volfgang that there should be biome specific water like there is grass. It obviously would be a lot more tedious as grass is just a cycling between a specified spectrum of colors. We would need some more biomes to take advantage of this. Like swamps and wetlands.
I think ultimately to achieve what I want, changing the transparency would be the best, simplest, and most realistic solution. With the new lighting engine.. it could result in some very beautiful things.
