After playing on several servers that do not have a whitelist or whatever, I encountered the "griefing" phenomenon. Here is an idea to help combat this:
A craft-able Claim Stake. Basically, you make a set of stakes out of a sign, redstone torch, and a diamond. When you place a stake, you will have a certain range to place the next one (maybe up to 32 blocks?) where, once placed, they will light up. (maybe make the stake light up in your hand when in range to aid in placing) Then you place a 3rd to make a triangle and a 4th that would be up to 32 blocks down. Of course, you would need 8 to make a cube.
Once you have placed these, only YOU can modify the stakes, and anything inside the pyramid shape to include mining and placing blocks. Others can still access your chest, unless you make some clever traps. :smile.gif:
Each person can make a certain number (16?) of these stakes to stop people from claiming the entire world. And each stake looks like a special sign that automatically has the placing players name on it.
some questions for you guys....
-Make everything inside the claim TNT proof, or keep it interesting? hehe
-How to avoid some griefer from building a dirt bridge over your claim, claiming that, and making a massive waterfall into your house? I can see it already...
-Originally, I thought to use just 1 sign that claims the entire chunk. Thoughts?
-Any other suggestions to add?
Newbie with no diamonds yet makes a house, griefer comes by at night and places claim stakes around the house.
ALTERNATELY
Griefer hacker spends days walking around claiming several kilometers of land, preventing a city from expanding.
1 - I didn't want them to be too easy to make, hence the diamond. You're still on your own until you get the materials.
2 - "Each person can make a certain number (16?) of these stakes to stop people from claiming the entire world. And each stake looks like a special sign that automatically has the placing players name on it."
- the max range between stakes has that 32 block limit, and you can only have and/or place 16 stakes total. Now, that means that you can claim 3 32x32x32 squares, or you can claim a 1x1x512 line.
-you can't claim a part of another claim
OPs and Admins of a server can set land claims, one chunk at a time. They do it with the following command:
/claim <player> <X Coordinate>, <Z Coordinate>
Once an area is claimed, no one can build on it except the player. Furthermore, all the chunks surrounding it get claimed as neutral chunks that no one can build in, to prevent people from surrounding claimed chunks with lava or whatever. If the admin or OP doesn't specify a name it is set as a neutral chunk. If they don't specify coordinates, it is the current chunk they are in.
You can clear the claim on a chunk by typing:
/clearclaim <X Coordinate>, <Z Coordinate>
This system prevents griefing, and can be controlled ONLY by the server admins and OPs

Yeah. They should be easier to make. Also, this can be a very effective griefing tool.
I'd rather you just be able to set it so that only YOU can modify blocks that you've placed. To prevent griefers from abusing this (Making a giant indestructible **** in someones house for example), you can't place blocks on a block someone else has placed unless you are that person.
You'd type /protect or something to toggle the block protection.

Griefer digs up all the surface dirt, then lays it back down. No one can build on it. Griefing complete.

I hadn't thought of that.
Theres really no way to protect against griefers. Build a moat, they build a bridge, build a wall, they dig under it. Build a complex trap, they dig for a bit, find and f**k up the redstone and continue on their way.

I disagree.

In that system only admins can grief and no one will play in a server with griefing admins unless it is a 100% free for all pvp server.

The idea is to protect a relatively small area without encroaching on other player's area. 32x32x32 is actually a pretty small area, and you can only make enough stakes to have 3 of those. They only protect your little corner of the world from having someone else dig or place blocks. Enough to protect your house, and with some clever traps, your chests as well.
The "Claiming the chunk" idea is not bad, but I doubt that the server admin wants to be pestered to claim each person's chunks. So perhaps using 1 stake claims the chunk, and you can only make 3?
I don't know what notch has planned for 1.8, but with NPCs and villages, maybe you would have to buy these stakes rather than make them?
Also, the idea to keep them a bit on the expensive side (with diamond) is so you avoid "server hoppers" that log into a server, claim an area, then log off never to be seen again. So, you log into a new server, and you find a nice quiet spot to mine, eventually you'll get some diamonds, just like now. Then you can start with a fancy house or whatever and keep it protected.
I want to keep the idea simple, yet effective, and avoid making it overpowered.
There are already mods that provide this functionality. I use WorldEdit on my server, and it functions very much like you describe. It can be configured to permit individual users or just administrators to enact claims.
EDIT: Oh, and keeping track of who placed each block would be infeasible with the current level format. Sorry.

Sweet! Now if it was included in the game when it's officially released, I'd be happy!
