You know how Notch is adding NPC villages? And quests?
Well, I was thinking; Maybe in the new creative mode, they could add a 'convert to adventure' button, and add programmable NPCs. That way, we could actually make storylines, and whole worlds of adventure!
Whenever you'd right-click a passive sentient NPC without holding any items in multiplayer, you can adjust things they say, as well as implementing a system to make replies to certain words that players say, when they're in hearing range, of about 20 blocks.
Also, adding SinglePlayer chat to work with this wouldn't be too difficult.
You could also add actions. Such as, whenever they communicate with the player, they begin following the player, or attacking, and you could even set them to deactivate using 'codes' for things like pressure plates. An example of the command list for an NPC could be:
TEXT "Hail! I will help you on your quest!"
FOLLOW PLAYER
PLAYER CONTACT 'plate1'
TEXT "Unfortunatley, I will go no further."
FOLLOW END
PATHFIND 0,0,0
Example #2:
VISION PLAYER
TEXT "Foul monster! I will end you!"
ATTACK PLAYER
With something as diverse as programming NPCs for creative mode, it's unimaginable what future adventure maps would be able to do!
Something that really inspires the idea for this is a flash game about making levels, which has a reaaaallllllyyyyyy good switch implementation. Said flash is called 'Last Legacy', by a person called 'Runouw'.
That sounds fantastic, but I'm not sure how difficult it would be to implement. That said, I would love to see something like this, and not just in a mod. There's no reason to restrict something that only alters gameplay when you opt into it to a third-party addition. The only worry I have about this is that it might not be quite as in-depth as people might end up wanting it to be. It would need to be both portable and extensible, similar to the Expression 2 in Garry's Mod, though simple enough to be used by beginners. A lot could go wrong, but I'm not one to shoot down a good idea just because it's not fully fleshed out yet.
Last time I checked "Quests" were NOT being added, only NPCs. Though being able to switch modes from creative to survival etc would be nice....if annoying...

At a loss for words? Here's a few you can use: Welcome, to Night Vale...

Notch suggested that he'd had plans for it, in his interview with the lead guy at Bethesda. I'll check to see if I can find it.
I would like it if Creative mode served to help build Adventure maps (should Adventure mode be implemented of course). If that were the case, programmable NPCs would be a very welcome addition. :smile.gif:

I award you one Swede-head of approval.
I don't disagree but maybe you could add some more to your whole description of HOW you could use them. More in depth.
a checkbox when u generate a new world if there were NPCs at all that way you could have some adventure maps and some just you!! =)
if this is what you meant then oops but atleast people will be able to read it in a different way LOL

I'm explaining it a bit better up above.
