Alright, so my idea is Grappling Arrows. It is basically Arrows crafted with String, but it has many uses. I'll start with how you craft it, to further help explain it, but all of its uses will be explained.
Crafting:
The Grappling Arrow is, as its name suggests, an arrow, so therefore the recipe for crafting involves Arrows. Pretend is String.
That's it. An Arrow and two pieces of String. Now, for its uses.
Use for Bows:
A Grappling Arrow would be shot from a Bow the way normal Arrows would. However, when shot, a long string will trail from its back. That leads to these variations from regular Arrows:
Range: The Grappling Arrow would have the same range as regular Arrows to begin with, however, after twenty meters (blocks), the String would become "Taut" and the Arrow would fall to the ground.
Multiple Arrows: Shooting a single Grappling Arrow and lodging it in a block would be sort of like a Fishing Pole; you're sitting there with a String coming out of your Bow and leading to the Arrow. However, if you fire a second Grappling Arrow directly afterwards and lodge it in a different block, the String would switch from connecting Arrow and Bow to connecting to the two Arrows. Once this happens, the player can "climb" the String between the Arrows, allowing them to reach high places without building.
Walls: If the "climbing" conditions for the above feature are met, and the String is at least two meters (blocks) above any other, then the String can effectively be used as a wall. Basically, if a Mob runs into it, it will be as if they are walking against a block, except that they can still see the player. This barricade is meant to be quick but not permanent, so the String will "break" and disappear if it is (1) attacked once, (2) being "pushed against" (touched) by two Mobs at one time, and (3) having existed for a certain amount of time.
Use for Dispensers:
Dispensers would oly be compatible with one use for Grappling Arrows, and that is the Wall feature. The only difference is that only one Grappling Arrow would need to exist for this to happen, as the String can link the Dispenser and the Arrow.
Cons:
When the "Wall" feature is in effect, the player cannot pass through the String without breaking it.
Two Arrows must be used for both the Grappling feature and the Wall feature if you are using a Bow.
Things I Have Not Yet Thought Out:
I have no idea how, if you have both Grappling Arrows and regular Arrows in your inventory, the Bow will tell which one to fire. The only solution I can come up with is it will fire whatever is in the closest space to it.
sounds nice but takes away the function of ladders.
That's true, as long as ladders exist there is no point to use anything else to climb. And for the 'wall' feature, you could just use a glass block to the same effect.

Every part of this suggestion is meant to be a quick way of doing something, like getting up to a high ledge once for a look around or something, or being chased by a Mob and simply hitting a Button to deploy a temporary wall from a Dispenser. In short, quick, but not permanent. Ladders and Glass are much more permanent and take longer to deploy.
Not bad...The wall thing makes no sense. It's a string.

Hypothetical: You read a thread in the Suggestions forum. You suddenly realize you've seen the idea before. Maybe it's a duplicate? No. Maybe it's just you? No. Maybe it's been done already? Very likely: Click here if there's a mod for that.

Hey, that same String can be pulled taut to shoot arrows and is strong enough to pull Fish in, isn't it? And that's part of the reason it breaks so easily.

Yeah. So?
It's a string and string in the way doesn't stop people from walking, period. Not a wall.
Besides that, that feature is 100% useless. In the time it takes to set up this magical string-induced fairy shield, you can put a field between yourself and any enemy so they won't pursue. Or be a man and kill them.

Quick getaways, etc. Would the arrow still do damage, and if it did, would it allow you to retrieve the monster? Also, could you upgrade and arrow with a 'rope' item to make the grapple last slightly longer?

70% of people have signatures that try and boost their superiority complexes. Post this if you're a hypocrite.

Firstly: Do you see a "rope" in the game? Secondly: Yes, damage. Thirdly: Want to reel in a monster? Use a Fishing Pole.
