So I was playing on my friends server the other day. In it there is a giant castle with very high ceilings. and I looked up and couldn't see the top because it was so dark. And I thought, the only way to make things visible up there would be to either cover it all up in glowstone or spam torches everywhere. Neither option seemed right in this situation. A little while later I went back to my house and realized I have torches spammed everywhere to make monsters not spawn. And that is when it hit me, there should be a block to help with lighting.
Yes I realize, there are items like jack-o-lanterns, glowstone, and torches which can all be used, but sometimes you have to have so much of them to have the lighting right to make things look nice, that it is these items which then make things look bad.
So what I suggest is that there is a block in the game that emits light for something like a 3 block radius, maybe more, where the light level is max. There would be no degradation of light level and past this radius instead of the light level going down by one for every block, it would take two blocks for it to go down by one light level.
I know upon reading this your going to be saying, "Vinyl, this is out of balance and should never be in Minecraft!" But consider a few things first. Notch is adding creative mode in the adventure update, thus there is going to be a mode within the game where we have an infinite supply of every block we want, so balance isn't much of an issue and this block would be good for the creative players who don't want there items to be spammed with torches or ugly glowstone.
And now you might be saying "the creative players all play on peaceful so they don't really need to worry about light!" and to counter that I say that many creative players still play on SMP servers. Actually the server I play on is actually a pvp smp server that has slowly become a creative server, but we still love seeing out creepers!
And now you might also be saying "ok, this might be alright for creative mode, but what about an smp server where we have to hunt for our blocks, wouldn't it be easy to get and make torches, jack-o-lanterns, and glowstone obsolete?" and to that I say no. The block wouldn't be a natural block, it would be crafting. Actually I'm not even sure if it should be a block or not, but that'll be decided later. I haven't decided on an actual crafting recipe yet, but I think it should involve a combination of light emitting items light glowstone, torches, and netherrack and maybe some redstone dust because redstone is cool haha. If you like the idea please comment!
I like criticism, but please make it constructive criticism don't just say "no, this idea sucks go die!"
haha I thought someone was going to bring that up! I'm an engineering major who has a sister who edit all my papers. Normally when I'm writing an essay the ideas aren't just flowing from me as I write them so I do have paragraphs. If this suggestion gets semi-popular (good or bad) I'll try to fix the first post
What about the recipe for glowstone with the dust replaced with blocks? That makes it hard to obtain and explains its insane level of lighting.
hmm that might actually work, but would actually make it harder, and use the old crafting recipe for glowstone blocks (3x3). That would require 144 pieces of glowstone dust to make, or if that is too high, the new recipe (2x2) uses 64 glowstone dust, which I guess might fit into the game better because that is the max stack.
Effectively, a single block can stop mobs can spawning from a little more than double the distance. I feel like it would need to be extremely hard to gather a block like that, which is why I was think either 4 or 9 glowstone blocks to make it

Hadn't realised the incredible glowstone dust demand for that recipe...

I'm still not sure of that, with the insane light level and all
