Seeing the ravines I began thinking about how to get to the bottom. The quickest way of course is to jump. But quickest is not always best. The best way I could think about was to slowly travel down through a series of tunnels and ladders.
Kinda boring. And with every second wasted the sun gets lower and the depths become less inviting. So why not bring a rope?
It would be made out of string i suppose. A line of three strings could make a rope one block long. Standing at the edge of a cliff with a stack of rope one click would put one rope down. Holding the button would put more rope and you release when it is long enough. Then it is a simple trick to just slide down into the abyss.
After a day of exploring you can head back to the rope but you wont be able to climb back up (have you ever tried to climb a rope carrying lots of rocks?) Allowing you a quick and efficient way down holes is balanced out by the fact that it is a one way trip.

Actually not a bad idea. the only problem is if it would be an actual object like a ladder or maybe you are able to pass through it?
The Better Than Wolves mod has rope like that. You have to place an 'anchor', then you can just keep clicking to add more rope, which technically is what you're suggesting. I agree though; I would love ropes. (They should be climbable in both directions however. Not only down, but up as well. Can you climb a ladder with a bag full of rocks either?)
