On the eve of Adventure Mode and, according to the Wiki, Creative Mode, it seems Survival Mode will start to lose its appeal. As it stands, Survival Mode is sort of combined with Creative Mode, in the sense that anyone can create their type of home/structure/anything. People use Survival Mode to build things as one would in Creative Mode. The issue I see that will arise is that once Creative Mode is officially integrated to Minecraft, as its own Mode, people will migrate to Creative Mode and leave Survival Mode behind.
I still very much enjoy Survival Mode, with the dangers it brings. I would like to see Survival Mode really flourish into its own game mode. To do this I have some ideas for its growth.
1) More Mob - The Mob in current Survival Mode can easily be evaded and ignored. With more Mod, in addition to the new Mob that's going to be added in the Adventure Update, the survival aspect of the Mode would really come out.
2) New Combat - Knowing that Notch is going to add new, exciting combat mechanics to the Adventure Mode, they would be a refreshing touch in Survival Mode when combating the Mob.
3) Mob can break Blocks - As it stands, anyone can build a 3x3x3 cube to hide in and they will be safe throughout the night. This sort of "permanent safety" takes away the fear element from Survival Mode. Taking away some excitement. If Mobs can break blocks, the fear is brought back and makes the player have to think of new ways to protect himself. Some people may not like the idea of the Mob destroying their "grand creation" of a house but that can easily be fixed by either creating it in Creative Mode or bring the difficulty down to peaceful.
4) Mobs only at night - Given that the Mob can destroy your home/defenses, there needs to be time to make repairs. This is best done during the day when no Mobs will be present. The daytime can be used to make repairs, gather resources, or craft weapons and defenses.
5) More frequent Resources - Also given that daytime is very much limited, being able to gather resources quickly is a must. Right now, it takes a good portion of the day to find things like iron, coal, redstone and not to mention the oh-so-rare diamond. Making these easier to obtain will balance out the amount of Mob and the damages that will come at night.
I think these things would bring appeal back to Survival Mode, one Creative Mode is put into place, by giving the player more of a challenge and more dangers. I feel this suggestions will help keep Survival Mode strong, past the Adventure Update.
There is not going to be an adventure mode. Adventure like aspects are just getting added to survival mode. There will be two modes, survival mode and creative mode.

Your right about the adventure aspects for 1.8 but Notch has stated that there will be a stand alone Adventure Mode that will be separate from Survival Mode and I think these suggestions will help it for when that time comes.

First of all, that was over a year old and notch could have easily changed his mind. Even if there will be an adventure mode, this will not be needed. Survival will be fun because you can gather your resources. That will not be true of any other mode.

But I feel like that wouldn't really be "Survival Mode" but rather "Collecting Mode." It is true that Notch could have changed his mind and this is no longer the case but I would like to see an actual SURVIVAL mode where people really do need to focus on surviving. It's a suggestion and thought it could be something interesting.

Fine then. What you are suggesting should be for a new mode called "Hardcore survival" or something. I want the current survival mode to stay just they way it is.

I like all the ideas except that mobs can break blocks, and the only way to stop this is to turn the mobs off. I like survival the way that it is with how the mobs can't break blocks. I like that they may be able to, but only certain types, like wood. This way you may be able to stop the zombies and sleep peacefully.

Added to the idea that different blocks break at different rates. Sound good?
Concidering the point of this mode is to defend against the zombies, I say no beds should be allowed.
I think there can be since the player can choose to risk the night through their defenses. If they feel their defenses are strong enough they could hit the hay.
