I had started a new project of mining out a floor of the largest mountain I have found in my map for a nice view point from high above. Wile doing so I got really tired of the repetition and decided to put the tons of gunpowder I had collected to use and blast out a large portion of the mountain. After a few blasts I realized that correcting the collateral damage would be far more painstaking than just mining it out block by block. So as I was doing just that I started thinking why they don't make blast mining more viable. An alternate option to mining for more veteran players who have an excess of resources at had. I thought the problem could be simply solved with the option of focused blasts. A new block crafted like the dispenser but with obsidian in place of cobblestone and TNT in place of the bow but nothing where the redstone went. When placed it faces in the direction of the players point of view and when detonated only destroys blocks in a very long straight line. Just my thoughts on the matter, lemme know what you think.
More focused blast mining has been suggested in a number of ways already but I'll go ahead and post my version:
TNT that will only destroy blocks in a given direction. In addition, if two or more are side-by-side, one exploding will detonate the other TNT near it (to enable chain-reaction explosions). And a single TNT will only effect a 1x1 width radius unless it's set up to chain with other TNT.
Crafted as follows, with bonemeal instead of sand (shown here as wool) and soul sand (shown as cobble) replacing most of the gunpowder.
The idea is it'll "stick" to a single block, and glue used to be made from bones and such, hence the bonemeal. A lot less gunpowder to reflect the decreased explosive power. And soul sand [which always struck me as a muffling sort of material] to contain the explosion (hence it being carefully directed) and just to make it a late-game thing and give the Nether more incentive.
It should be placeable on all sides of a block, directed only toward whichever block it's placed on, and destroy 5 blocks with eact TNT. So, if placed on a single block in the center of a floor, it should result in a 5-block deep tunnel [1-block wide) tunnel.
So, basically, direction should be based on facing, like so:
Placed on top of a block should destroy blocks downward.
Placed on bottom should destroy blocks upward.
Placed on any side should destroy blocks toward the opposite side.
Hypothetical: You read a thread in the Suggestions forum. You suddenly realize you've seen the idea before. Maybe it's a duplicate? No. Maybe it's just you? No. Maybe it's been done already? Very likely: Click here if there's a mod for that.

The Sun rises in the North! Now these points of data make a beautiful line...
