In minecraft, all you need to do is build an underground base to survive, or a house on the surface. Put in some torches, have some windows maybe, a door or 2, and even if the house is just big enough for you to be inside, you're perfectly safe.
If a mob sees you inside of your house, all that they do is sit there and stare at you. Maybe they'll walk a bit close to you, but thats it. If you build a house out of just a small amount of blocks and sit inside of it, YOU'RE INVINCIBLE.
Come on, Notch. This sucks, and its the reason I end up deleting a save file eventually and starting anew.
The challenge of minecraft dies when you have shelter.
My suggestion is that enemy MOBs should be able to break through blocks and things that are in the way in order to get to you. If an enemy sees you, he will do the following.
a) He will walk towards you.
b ) If there are blocks obstructing him, his AI will check if he would be able to jump over it.
c) He won't actually jump to see if he can. If he can't jump over it to get to you, the blocks that he is touching will be slowly destroyed, as if he is a player using his hand or a non-tool item to destroy the block.
d) Once there are no blocks obstructing his path to you that he cannot jump over, he will start attacking you.
Different monsters would do different amounts of destruction to different blocks, and there can be MOBs made specially for this.
For example, there could be a MOB that wields an axe and will do higher destruction to wooden blocks.
Another MOB, one with a pickaxe would do more damage to stone blocks and ore blocks, so that you can't be safer in wooden houses.
There could also be a MOB with a shovel who will do more damage to dirt. Basically, there will be special MOBs that will do slightly more damage to some things.
My idea for these MOBs is that they will all be goblins. They won't be horde-like, they won't make villages, and their AI will be very similiar to the zombie AI. They will use stone tools, but they will do formidable damage to certain materials unlike other MOBs. I don't care if Notch decides to not make them be goblins, but as long as they aren't something stupid like aliens, and they aren't too original (we don't need purple foxes with 3 tails to be the MOBs using tools) then I'm happy. :smile.gif:
The one other difference is that if Notch ever makes the zombies have more of a horde mentality and attract others, the goblins won't be like this too.
Also, there will be goblins that wield swords, for the sake of completion. But what I mostly care about and want is for the enemy MOBs to actually be able to break into the buildings you create.
NO. Don't click New Thread. Read the rules. I don't give a damn how long or boring they are. If you do not, you will be subject to massive flaming and criticism by yours truly.
Minecraft isn't about surviving in the least. Although I do think there should be a hard core survival mode, currently, just because you can survive in minecraft doesn't mean you've "Won".
Also, zombies should be able to dig, slowly. Pigmen should dig at the normal speed of the player, but they are not hostile unless you attack them.
Shelter is a way to survive, but it shouldn't make it impossible for enemies to be able to fight you.
The reason I quit is because usually I end up with chests full of wood and stone and lots of iron, and since the only way to meet and fight enemies is to actually let them, I delete and restart. :/

I found a nifty idea here that makes surviving a bit tougher.
Besides that, llama's got the right idea. Survival is a very low priority in the game.
Hypothetical: You read a thread in the Suggestions forum. You suddenly realize you've seen the idea before. Maybe it's a duplicate? No. Maybe it's just you? No. Maybe it's been done already? Very likely: Click here if there's a mod for that.
Heh, I was just reading that. :tongue.gif: I want the zombies to have hive minds, that would be an excellent idea.
I know survival is a low priority, but its the way that the game is challenging, and a game that isn't challenging isn't a game that is fun.
To nerf the monsters that break into your buildings, every monster would do half the damage a player would do to blocks. So normal monsters wouldn't quickly destroy wood. But since stone is ALOT stronger than wood, the pickaxe goblins would be a bit more common than the lumberjack ones.
