Pistons have been such a huge success, so here's an idea for another kind of device that moves blocks around.
The Input/Output Block aka the Suck/Spit Block aka the Tube Block is a tube like device that when activated by redstone pulls in blocks from one side and spits them out on the other side.
For example, if this cobblestone block is on the input side...
Activating the device would send it through the Tube Block and place it next to the output side.
Unlike pistons the tube block itself never moves or expands, it always remains a single block in size.
If there are already blocks against the output side the new block can push them away to make room, just like a piston. For example:
becomes...
Tube blocks like note blocks would suck in one block each time they're exposed to a redstone signal. The signal would have to be turned off and turned on again for them to suck in another. Plus you'd need to have a new block placed against the input side (either by hand or with a piston or another tube block) since it can't pull in blocks that aren't directly touching it.
Tube blocks can suck in other tube blocks as well as retracted pistons. And pistons can push tube blocks. However tube blocks cannot pull in players/mobs or loose items.
As for the scientific explanation for how tube blocks work? I didn't really imagine they use suction power, instead I imagine it as a mechanical device with a maw of tiny metal wheels that pulls blocks in.
By saying get your mind out of the gutter, you're admitting you thought of the same thing most people would think. So you yourself have a mind that is located in a gutter.

I have no defense against that. But don't blame the poor innocent and very useful tube block for my dirty mind.
The allocator is a very good idea, but it is also a very different idea. This block and the allocator do very different things, one moving items and the other moving placed blocks.

The allocator only moves loose items. This specifically does not affect lose items, only placed blocks.
Oh... lol, I just skimmed over the Allocator post. Sry 'bout that.

No worries. The allocator is great btw, this is basically the allocator but for solid blocks instead of items. Call it "allocator meets pistons"

Better idea.

Also better idea. Your point?

Except these don't suck in people, only blocks. Although it would be kind of funny if there were Mario style warp tubes in Minecraft.
