I had a thought last night about minecraft... wouldnt it be neat to be able to find collectable items as you mindlessly dig and fight your way through the world ?
Dinosaur bones, rare gems, pottery etc. all of which you could decorate your minecraft homes with.
Fossils would come in a variety of shapes but as a set of individual blocks, the user would basically have to assemble them into a display.
how to find them ?
Dungeon chests, mining (dropping from random blocks), and with the new adventure update perhaps exploration.
Imagine finding a tomb full of skeletons you could chop apart and take home with you to put on display

friend: "if this game came out when nintendo was popular it would still be stupid"
He just doesn't get it
I LOVE the idea. I find it boring when everyone has rooms built of diamond blocks or precious ores. Having truly unique items would add a sense of individuality and pride.
Actually, it could really add to the game because Notch said there will be combat magic, right? so maybe the collectibles could offer some sort of crazy ability for the player. Plus, it could be some sort of identifier for the player while online so they can show off there findings. It would also kinda add a feeling of accomplished, i guess, if you found something that is VERY rare in the game.
What do you mean, "This doesn't add to the game"? It would enable LOTS of possibilities and features to the game.
We've been seeing so many boring carbon-copy ideas, I think everyone's dismissing this without even thinking about it.
What does it add?
Well, what do bookshelves add?
Why make bricks an option if cobblestone acts precisely the same?
Minecraft has many aspects that are all about aesthetics, and hell, if I dug up a Ming Dynasty vase, I'd gladly show it off atop a mantle that I built purely for aesthetics.
