Well I think we are all getting hyped up about the 1.8 Adventure update. It looks amazing! With the inclusion of new physical abilities like critical hits and sprinting, I had an idea. The smallest passage a player can walk through is 1x2. If this is turned on its side, however...
We should be able to roll through there! It would be really cool to run from monsters, dash and roll under a place like this, even having the player's perspective go around in circles. It could also mean a whole new way of building things, conserving space like never before. What do you think?
On the one hand, it opens a lot of possibilities, but on the other hand, it changes a lot too.
There's a delicate balance between giving players more conveniences and giving them too many features that bog down the feel of the game.
Have you considered how this would work?
Would there be a specific key command for rolling? If so, the controls for Minecraft are simple...I feel like adding too many commands might make it feel clunkier.
I'd rather have you slide or crawl. Rolling would be a little more complicated to animate. Sliding would activated if you sprinted while you are crouching so you could easily run from mobs, whereas crawl would be if you were in no particular hurry and just wanted to go down your one block high shaft. And work your shaft,
I see where you're coming from. It may just make the game a little too complicated. As for controls, I hadn't even thought of that. I suppose Control would work, though it is a bit hard to reach. Animation for this would indeed be a feat - the idea of sliding is more feasible in that department.

...actually, this is clever, just reverse the controls.
Say your'e dashing and you crouch mid-dash...you could slide 2-3 blocks forward. Would be easy to animate and would allow access to very short passageways, which limits its utility so it's not TOO convenient.

I'll resume the idea: so ctrl (if it's not already occupied) will be crawl, if you aren't sprinting you will just crawl, if you were sprinting you slide, then continue crawling after three or four blocks. Crawling is slightly slower than crawling and if aimed perfectly at the horizon will leave Steve's head in the same position as a block.
The character moves slower. Moving diagonally will allow the player to move slightly faster, but not at full speed.
The character bends down one-eighth of a block. This can be viewed using F5.
No sound is made when sneaking.
Players cannot fall off blocks.
Crops will be trampled.
The camera will be ground level .
Other players in Survival Multiplayer cannot see your name through walls.
In SMP your name will be slighty darker than normal.
I'm not sure if I support, but the thought of the camera swinging wildly as you roll down a corridor, just cracks me right up. Throw on the 3D glasses, and watch players vomit! :laugh.gif:

I like it. I think it's pretty much exactly how Super Mario Brothers did it. But I still like it.
