Have you ever tried to make a custom map? Have you tried to make a block suffocation trap using sand, or gravel? Then you probably know how difficult it is to set up a platform of gravel held up by torch-airlocks, or at least how time consuming it is.
So, I propose a new block type: silt. Silt is a light brown-ish sand-looking block found under the dirt near a beach, or in clay-like deposits under the water. In it's natural state, it can be placed like dirt or any other block, making a sound like sand when walked upon. It does not apply to gravity, is not used in many crafting recipes, and has no other function. However, when redstone power was applied, it would apply to gravity much like sand or gravel, and have the same basic traits. If lava or water were to run adjacent to any side of the silt block, it would fall as well.
Silt would be used in only one crafting recipe. This would have one block of silt above a bucket of water, which would make soul sand.
Another feature of silt is waterways, or girders. If there is a block below silt and it cannot fall any distance downwards, redstone power would give it another use. It would change into an unavailable block (sort of like the glowing redstone ore block) called 'hollow silt'. Hollow silt looks like a darker version of silt
, and water and lava pass through it like air. An advantage to not being destroyed when powered is that, of course, it can be unpowered again to block the waterflow.
Yes, I know that pistons do this quite well and efficiently. However, 'hollow silt' is very useful for mob traps as mobs do not pass through it, but items do. Pistons block off items as well as mobs and entities.
So, why have silt? Well, it would be very useful for traps. It is balanced and fits the theme of minecraft, and in my opinion, that is what matters. Suggested ideas should be things that if you didn't know it weren't in the game, you could believe could plausibly be a part in it. I personally think that the idea makes sense and is reasonable, but I didn't post this here to see MY opinion. So, tell me yours!

Could be fun. It wouldn't be overpowered just faster.
Thanks for commenting!
I agree, it would add more ambience to the game as any new natural block types would, and would be a sensible idea in my opinion.
I like the idea.Could lead to easier collapsing staircases
Exactly, or easier suffocation traps. Not to mention an amazing finale to a custom map.
Imagine an enormous pyramid for a setting. You get to the end, and press a button for it to collapse and spell out giant letters, saying "Thanks for playing"!
You know it's amazing how quickly threads die... My two best ones (Mystery Block and A Brand New Look For Minecraft) died horrendously quickly. I wish you could bump without getting reported.
I added a new feature to the original post. Hopefully, that will make this idea more appealing!
Also, to moderators in the suggestions forum: I tried to delete one of the earlier, somehwat spammy posts, however it would not let me. Please, do not delete this topic for spam. Just delete my early "bump" post that I didn't realize was not allowed, at the time.

That's unfortunate....I would really appreciate it if people saw this.
Haha I am with ya all the way.
