Something tells me this has already been stated somewhere on these forums, but I came to null in searching for a topic relating to it. I would like to see a multiplayer mode in which only 2 people can play, maybe up to 4. By making files shared, without needing to rent or own a server box. Or even know how to run a server, if you just want to play vanilla. Even if you want to add mods, you can add them in the same fashion one would install non-server related mods. (Excuse my ignorance, as I have no idea HOW to run a server.) You could simply have pretty much a "room" with a player list of who can join, and it will show up for them as well in the "Multiplayer" menu.
Any ideas of how well this would work, or how it would work, or even IF it would work, I would love to hear. Always looking forward to learn more about all of this.
Called LAN, the same thing as setting up a server, you just don't put the IP online. So already possible as long as you don't have a crappy computer.

Theoretically possible however, if you can't afford to throw down a few dollars a month towards a dedicated host you certainly wouldn't be able to afford a computer capable of running as a client and a server simultaneously given the current rendering operations of MC. The memory, bandwidth (particularly on the upload stream), and cpu demands of such a setup would be insanely huge.

No, a local area network would require the computers to be on the same connection. The OP seems to be suggesting a TCP/IP connection that uses one computer as both a client and a server simultaneously within the same application.
Yeah, I'm not talking about LAN, though I still don't know how that would work. Like I said, I'm not fluent with server mechanics and whatnot. I have a basically dormant computer that I can clear the harddrive and use as a server if I needed to. I don't know how it would work, I don't know what I would need to have to make it a server, and I don't know how to upkeep the server at all.

Well that is also possible, although not in the same application. You would still need to run the server software and access it via the client software I think.
To the OP: If you don't know how to manage a server and aren't tech savvy, you would be better of renting a server from a hosting site. And like it was said, if you can't afford to do that, you probably can't run a server and client on the same PC anyways.

In that case just get yourself a copy of the server software and try it out. Hopefully your dormant box can handle the load and your web connection can handle the upload stream. You might need to open a few ports on your firewall to get it to run properly.
You can also check the minecraft wiki, they have a bit of info on it.
